Orange Walk Town brings together historic sites, Mestizo culture and a boat trip along the New River towards Lamanai. The Heritage Trail offers an independent look at the town’s history; on the river, the Maya temples and possible wildlife sightings take centre stage. This lets you choose different focuses for your trip: a walk around town or a journey on the water.

Explore Orange Walk Town on Foot

The Orange Walk Town Heritage Trail is a walking route for independently exploring historic buildings, monuments and sites. It begins at Banquitas House of Culture on Main Street. Ten locations feature information boards with brief historical texts and photographs. The trail thus connects several stops and offers concise insights into the history of Orange Walk Town. The leisurely walk takes about an hour; you can include one or two taco stops.

Historic Sites on the Heritage Trail

The 2019 report on the Orange Walk Heritage Trail sign project named Fort Cairns, St. Peter’s Anglican Church and Main Street as sites. The selection also includes The Barracks and Riverside, Old Hospital (Sandy Hunter Library), and Old Power Plant (Fire Station). Fort Mundy, Piedmonte Cemetery, La Immaculada Church and Central Park were also among the historic sites named for the project. Together, these places offer several different points of connection to the town’s history.

Orange Walk Town is home to a large Mestizo population and is associated with Mestizo culture and folklore. This cultural heritage adds another dimension to the town’s historic buildings and monuments. One of the sites mentioned is also linked to a specific historic event: the Battle of Orange Walk took place on September 1, 1872, at The Barracks on the banks of the New River. The Northern Maya Association of Belize continued the wreath-laying ceremony in memory of the battle at the obelisk site.

By Boat Along the New River to Lamanai

From Orange Walk, a boat trip along the New River leads to the Maya temples of Lamanai. Along the way, you may see snail kites, jacanas, Morelet’s crocodiles and iguanas. These possible wildlife sightings add another point of interest to the trip to the temples. Unlike the approximately one-hour Heritage Trail, the focus here is not a walk around town but the river journey to Lamanai.

The Wider Orange Walk District

The wider Orange Walk District is also home to the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area, a privately protected landscape covering 254,000 acres. The protected area provides a broader landscape context for the district, extending beyond Orange Walk Town’s historic sites and culture.

When looking for a vacation rental, you can plan your trip around the different experiences on offer: exploring the Heritage Trail independently in Orange Walk Town or taking a boat from Orange Walk along the New River to Lamanai.
