Corozal is a coastal town and Belize’s northernmost municipality. The Corozal House of Culture is located in town and overlooks the bay; it also offers visitors an introduction to the long and varied history of the Corozal region. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Corozal, consider whether town history, culture and glimpses of local life should be the focus of your trip.

Experience the Corozal Town Historical Walk

The Corozal Town Historical Walk covers eight stops and begins at the Corozal House of Culture. This self-guided tour takes about 45 minutes. Local tour guides and tourism students from Corozal Junior College also offer guided tours. You can choose between exploring on your own in roughly the stated time or joining a guided tour. The tour was inaugurated in May 2017 through the efforts of the Corozal House of Culture. As route details may change, check them before your visit.

Culture and history in town

The Corozal House of Culture combines views of the bay with its role as a visitor attraction: it introduces visitors to the region’s history and offers interactive exhibits and educational activities about traditions, languages and dance. These themes give a visit to town a cultural focus that extends beyond individual historic sites.

One stop on the Corozal Town Historical Walk is Corozal Town Hall. A graphic mural inside the building depicts events that shaped Corozal Town, as well as the Caste War in Mexico. This led to the migration of refugees and the settlement of the Corozal and Orange Walk districts in the mid-to-late 19th century. Fort Barlee is in the center of Corozal and recalls the legacy of British settlers. Together, these places point to different chapters in the town’s history.

The Gabriel Hoare Market offers a different glimpse of local life. The market sells local fruits and vegetables and gives visitors an impression of everyday life in the area. This provides a distinct focus alongside the historic sites: here, the emphasis is on market life and the produce on offer, rather than another account of history.

Santa Rita also connects the town with its past. This important Postclassic community was strategically located as a center of trade and communication. Santa Rita is in Corozal District, in the northwestern part of the present-day town of Corozal. Its historical significance adds an earlier era to the themes of the walking tour.

The wider Corozal District

Corozal District is also home to the Shipstern Nature Reserve, a 31-square-mile tropical rainforest. A visit includes a tour of the Visitor’s Centre and Butterfly Garden, as well as visits to the museum, Botanical Trail and Mahogany Park. Alongside Corozal’s town history, the district offers a distinct focus on nature and landscapes.

Corozal is a destination to consider for travelers looking to explore a coastal town with historic and cultural points of interest. The historical walking tour, the House of Culture, Fort Barlee and the market each offer a different perspective. A vacation rental in Corozal is one possible accommodation option if you’d like to make the town itself the main focus of your trip.
