Culture

Oğuz Rayon’s cultural network includes a local history museum, the Heydar Aliyev Museum, a culture and recreation park, as well as 32 state-registered historical and cultural monuments. The Oğuz History and Local Lore Museum has been operating since 1981. It preserves and displays more than 4,500 exhibits; its sections cover nature, archaeology, history up to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and modern history.

The documented heritage of Oğuz Rayon includes Surxay Khan Fortress, Gavur Fortress, Oğuz Fortress, an Albanian church, medieval settlements, necropolises, mosques, bridges and other sites. The historical places mentioned date from the Bronze and Iron Ages to the 19th century.

Oğuz’s Jewish community also continues to preserve its traditions. The Lower Synagogue was built in 1849 and is considered the town’s first synagogue. The Upper Synagogue was built in 1857 and fully restored in 2006. Visitors can visit Oğuz’s synagogues as part of a Jewish cultural experience.

Landscape

Oghuz Rayon is home to many waterfalls as well as sulphur and thermal water springs. Places 15–20 km from the district centre of Oğuz are described as suitable for fishing and hunting; local village guides are available. Walnuts, hazelnuts, apples, pears, cornelian cherries, hawthorns, cherries, plums, currants and raspberries grow in Oghuz Rayon.
