Discover Vinh Long: Temples, Museum and River Life
Accommodation in Vinh Long
History, temple architecture and river experiences offer different perspectives on Vĩnh Long. In the city centre, the Vĩnh Long Museum and several religious buildings provide a cultural focus; nearby An Bình Island adds a boat trip and activities at Vinh Sang. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to consider in advance whether you mainly want to explore the city’s sights or also set aside time for a trip on the water.
Museum and cultural history
The Vĩnh Long Museum is in the city centre, next to a landing stage for tourist boats on the Cổ Chiên River. The indoor exhibitions cover revolutionary history, the cultures of the Kinh, Hoa and Khmer peoples, and a reconstructed old house dedicated to Hùng Vương. The collection includes more than 28,000 documents and artefacts on the revolutionary history and ethnic cultures of Vĩnh Long Province. The museum also holds the annual Hùng Vương commemoration festival on the tenth day of the third lunar month. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the date for the relevant year.
Temple complexes and recurring festivals
In District 5 stands Thất Phủ Miếu, a religious and architectural complex in the style of southern China. Craftspeople from Fujian built it between 1892 and 1909. The complex is arranged around a four-sided courtyard with a front hall, main sanctuary, and east and west wings. Connecting structures, called hà cầu, provide passage between these areas. Thất Phủ Miếu was recognised as a national historical and cultural monument in the architectural category on 25 January 1994.
The lunar calendar also shapes the ceremonies there: annual commemorations include celebrations for Phước Đức Chánh Thần, Tam Nguyên and Tứ Quý. Particular prominence is given to Ông Day on the 13th day of the first and fifth lunar months, and the year-end ceremony on the 15th day of the twelfth lunar month. Công Thần Miếu, also recognised as a national historical and cultural monument, holds the annual Xuân-tế-cầu-an festival. It lasts four days and nights, during which traditional rituals and folk activities continue to be observed. Festival dates follow the lunar calendar.
Văn Thánh Miếu was completed as a Confucian temple in 1866. Ceremonies are held there every year in spring and autumn on the Đinh days for Khổng Tử, as well as for saints and scholars. The complex includes the Văn Xương Pavilion, where Võ Trường Toản and Phan Thanh Giản are worshipped. These places have different emphases: the courtyard layout of Thất Phủ Miếu makes a particular architectural arrangement visible, while the ceremonies at the temples link the annual cycle with religious traditions.
Boat trip, island and local cuisine
An Bình, also known as Cù lao Minh, is in Long Hồ District between the Tiền River and the Cổ Chiên River. From Vĩnh Long, you can reach the island by boat in about 30 minutes; the actual duration may vary depending on river conditions and your departure point. Vinh Sang is on the island and offers folk activities such as pond fishing, crossing a monkey bridge and boating. As the operator’s programme may change, it is best to ask in advance about the current activities on offer.
Vĩnh Long passenger port began operating in October 2022. Its purpose is to serve passenger boats on inland waterways as a port of call for arrivals and departures. If a boat trip is part of your plans, check the current schedule. For a culinary stop, Tài Có Restaurant in District 1 is known for a traditional fish hot pot prepared from a family recipe and popular for more than 20 years. It is served with beef, shrimp, squid and local river vegetables. If you have this particular dish in mind, ask in advance about the current menu.
Plan your stay to suit your trip
For your holiday rental, you can use your preferred focus as a starting point: the city offers a museum and historic religious buildings, while An Bình adds a separate trip on the water. If you want to attend particular ceremonies or plan a boat trip, coordinate your travel dates with the lunar calendar or the current schedule. This makes it easier to match your accommodation search to the experiences that matter most to your trip.
