Vietnam:tt. Giồng Trôm – Memorial Sites and Temple Culture
Accommodation in Giồng Trôm
Giồng Trôm brings together memorial sites, temple culture and crafts made from coconut materials. The Nguyễn Thị Định Memorial Site, historic monuments and the Đình Bình Hòa festival tell different stories; on Cồn Hưng Phong, basket weaving and crafts made from coconut shells add to the mix. As you plan your trip, it is worth considering which of these interests you most before searching for a holiday rental.
Memorial Sites and Places of Remembrance
The Nguyễn Thị Định Memorial Site is in Ấp Phong Điền, Lương Hòa Commune, in Giồng Trôm District. It opened in December 2003 and covers 15,000 m². Its facilities include a stele house, a temple, an exhibition room, a documentary screening room, a rest pavilion and Nguyễn Thị Định’s workplace. For more than 20 years, the site has welcomed visitors, served as a place of religious worship and presented her life and work. The memorial site’s restoration is dedicated to commemorating Nguyễn Thị Định and honouring her contributions to national liberation and the development of the country. In September 2024, some parts of the site had already been affected; check which areas are open before visiting.
The four national historical monuments in Giồng Trôm District include both the tomb and temple of Lãnh binh Nguyễn Ngọc Thăng and the traces of the 1947 massacre of 286 innocent civilians. These represent different forms of remembrance: a tomb and temple complex, and a site commemorating the massacre. The temple to Lieutenant General Đồng Văn Cống is also in Tân Hào Commune and is a provincial historical and cultural monument.
Temple Art and Festival Traditions
Đình Bình Hòa is in Ấp 5A in the town of Giồng Trôm, and is one of Bến Tre Province’s three large communal temples. It was recognised as a national historical and cultural monument on 7 January 1993. The main hall and its adjoining worship area feature distinctive antique wood carvings made from valuable woods such as Căm xe, Tứ thiết and Sao. These details give a visit an architectural focus distinct from that of the memorial sites.
The festival calendar is also part of Đình Bình Hòa: the annual Kỳ-Yên Festival, also known as the Thượng-Điền Festival, takes place on the 12th and 13th days of the twelfth lunar month. The programme includes Hát bội and other traditional folk games. As the date follows the lunar calendar, check the date for the relevant year if you plan your trip around it. At Đình Bình Hòa, both enduring details of wood art and a recurring festival are highlights.
Coconut Crafts on Cồn Hưng Phong
On Cồn Hưng Phong, attractions visited by visitors include weaving baskets from coconut leaf stalks and making crafts from coconut shells. These two activities show different uses of coconut materials and add a craft focus to the historical and religious themes. Those interested in materials and how things are made will find a different way to experience Giồng Trôm District here than by visiting its monuments or temple.
Choosing the Right Focus for Your Trip
The places and themes offer different reasons to include Giồng Trôm in your travel plans: memorial sites draw attention to remembrance and national history, Đình Bình Hòa combines temple art with an annual festival, and Cồn Hưng Phong focuses on coconut crafts. Consider which of these experiences you would like to shape your stay, and tailor your holiday rental search to that focus. If you are interested in several themes, you can treat them as different reasons to visit rather than combining them into a single experience.
