Trà Vinh: Khmer Culture and Ao Bà Om
Accommodation in Trà Vinh
Trà Vinh brings together striking Khmer architecture, a distinctive natural landmark and a lively festival tradition. Those interested in culture will find a range of insights here: ornate pagodas, a museum exploring Khmer history and ways of life, and a temple featuring a replica of Hồ Chí Minh’s stilt house. Ao Bà Om complements these cultural attractions with its stretch of water and ancient trees.
Ao Bà Om: A Stretch of Water and Ancient Trees
Ao Bà Om is a natural and scenic site designated by the state as a national landscape monument. The grounds cover more than 18 hectares, of which 42,040 square metres are water. More than 500 Dầu and Sao trees grow along the banks, including some old specimens. These figures describe a place whose character is shaped by both water and its tree cover. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider Ao Bà Om a distinct natural and scenic highlight alongside Trà Vinh’s cultural and historical attractions.
Ao Bà Om is in Khóm 4, Ward 8, more than five kilometres southwest of Trà Vinh city centre. When choosing your holiday rental in Trà Vinh, Ao Bà Om’s location in relation to the city centre can be a helpful reference point.
Ok-Om-Bok and Khmer Culture
Every year, the Khmer festival of Ok-Om-Bok takes place at Ao Bà Om on the 14th and 15th days of the Khmer month of Ka-đâk. This corresponds approximately to the 14th and 15th days of the 10th month of the Vietnamese lunar calendar. The festival features folk games, traditional performances and exhibitions, as well as a moon-worship ceremony. Both community activities and religious traditions are therefore part of the occasion. If you are visiting Trà Vinh mainly for its culture, you can consider the festival as a distinct reason to travel, separate from a stay focused on pagodas and architecture.
Trà Vinh’s Khmer Ethnic Cultural Museum was inaugurated in 1995 and is located in Ward 8, within the Ao Bà Om Cultural and Tourism Complex. It preserves numerous exhibits on the history, spiritual culture and material life of the Khmer people in the province and the Mekong Delta. Its scope therefore extends beyond individual buildings, encompassing both history and cultural ways of life.
Pagodas and Architecture
Chùa Âng, also known as Chùa AngKor Raig Borei, is a national monument of architecture and art. Its eastern gate features traditional Khmer motifs of Yăk, Key-no and Krud. The main hall is 36 metres long and 24 metres wide, and its main roof has three tiers. A five-spired tower stands in front of the hall. These specific architectural features give the pagoda a distinctive profile. Like Ao Bà Om, it is located in Khóm 4, Ward 8, more than five kilometres southwest of the city centre.
Another Khmer pagoda with a different focus is Chùa Ông Mẹt. It is one of the oldest Khmer pagodas in Trà Vinh Province and has preserved its Khmer architecture almost unchanged. Its entrance has eight pillars decorated with Keyno birds, while the side walls are adorned with seven-headed snakes. In the main hall, 32 pillars made of precious wood support the structure, arranged in four rows. The Buddha statue there is 4.4 metres high, 5 metres long and 4.3 metres wide. The library also draws on traditional southern Khmer architecture: it is designed as a wooden stilt house. If you are interested in architectural details, you can observe a variety of forms and design elements in these features.
Another Historic Site
The Ho Chi Minh Temple is a site recognised as a national historical and cultural monument in 1989. A replica of Hồ Chí Minh’s stilt house was built on its grounds in 2012, at 97 percent of the original’s scale. The site adds a distinct historical dimension to the Khmer cultural attractions. When choosing your holiday rental in Trà Vinh, you can therefore consider whether your interests lie more in the pagodas and museum, the landscape monument, or this historic site as well. The different themes can help you plan your stay without needing to combine them into a single focus.
