Thái Nguyên brings together religious architecture, historic memorial sites and the tea culture of Tân Cương. The city can therefore be explored from different angles: through the history of its temples and memorial sites, through collections on Vietnamese culture, or through tea production and regional traditions. The right holiday apartment as a base depends on which of these experiences you would like to focus on.

Pagodas and historic memorial sites

Phù Liễn Pagoda stands on a hill covered with old trees in the centre of Thái Nguyên, in Hoàng Văn Thụ Ward. It is also known as Phù Liễn tự and Phù Chân Thiền tự. Following several restorations, it retains historic architectural features, including the Tam-Bảo Hall, the shrine to the Mother Goddess, the ancestral shrine building and an old stupa garden. Its history is also linked to the resistance against French rule. In the last years of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century, the pagoda served as a refuge and hiding place for some of the insurgents of Hoàng Hoa Thám and Đội Cấn.

Đội Cấn Temple is on historic Đội Cấn Hill in the centre, on Phủ Liễn Street in Hoàng Văn Thụ Ward. It honours Đội Cấn, leader of the Thái Nguyên uprising, and his insurgents. The temple was destroyed during the resistance against French rule; Thái Nguyên Province rebuilt it in 2002. Another memorial site is the Quan Triều communal house: on 31 December 2019, the provincial government recognised it as a provincial historic relic under Decision No. 4396/QĐ-UBND. The communal house is dedicated to Dương Tự Minh.

The National Historic Memorial Site to the 60 fallen members of Youth Volunteer Unit 915, Unit 91 Bắc Thái, is also in Thái Nguyên, in Gia Sàng Ward. In the first quarter of 2026, it received 208 visitor groups, with more than 50,100 visitors coming to tour the site, take part in incense ceremonies and pay their respects. These figures refer to the period stated; check the latest visiting arrangements before travelling.

Museum and tea culture

The Museum of the Cultures of Vietnam’s Ethnic Groups preserves more than 40,000 original documents and artefacts relating to the traditional culture of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. It offers practical cultural activities for groups, which must be booked in advance; an appointment must also be arranged. This is an important distinction for planning: a museum visit with a group activity requires more advance planning than a visit focused on the collections.

In Tân Cương, tea experiences add another dimension to the city’s history. The Tea Culture Space displays numerous tea artefacts and presents the production process as well as the history of tea cultivation in Thái Nguyên. Visitors can also take part in tea-making activities. Tân Cương is officially recognised as a community tourism destination in Thái Nguyên and is authorised to receive groups of domestic and international visitors. If you would like to learn about tea not just as an exhibit but also take an interest in its production, this offers a different focus from a day spent visiting temples and memorial sites.

Regional perspectives in Thành phố Thái Nguyên

The wider destination of Thành phố Thái Nguyên also offers other cultural and regional themes. The Thái Hải ecological conservation village, with its traditional stilt houses, is in Thịnh Đức. In 2023, knowledge of tea cultivation and processing in Tân Cương was recognised as Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage; the recognition applies, among others, to the people of Tân Cương in Thành phố Thái Nguyên. Tân Cương also hosts the annual tea festival “Hương sắc Trà xuân – Vùng chè đặc sản Tân Cương”. The festival’s competitions include fast tea picking and the traditional skills of roasting, packaging and brewing tea. The programme may vary; check the dates if the festival is to be a focus of your trip.

For another glimpse of urban life, there is Chợ Thái: the market has a trading tradition spanning more than a century and is on Đội Cấn Street in Trưng Vương Ward, Thành phố Thái Nguyên. Alongside the tea and cultural heritage themes, it offers a different aspect of the wider destination than the religious sites in central Thái Nguyên.

Getting there and choosing a holiday apartment

Thái Nguyên is connected by National Highway QL 3, which runs between Hanoi, Thái Nguyên, Bắc Kạn and Cao Bằng. QL 1B leads towards Lạng Sơn, while QL 37 leads towards Bắc Giang and Tuyên Quang. The regional transport network also includes the Hà Nội–Thái Nguyên and Lưu Xá–Kép railway lines. Check the latest timetables for specific train journeys.

Your preferred focus is a practical guide when choosing a holiday apartment: if the pagoda and Đội Cấn Temple are your priorities, plan around the cultural sites in the city centre; for tea experiences, focus your itinerary on Tân Cương. Compare the location of a specific accommodation with the places you actually plan to visit. This can help your base suit your planned days without requiring you to limit your trip to just one theme.
