Đông Hà can be explored through two distinct facets: as a place that played an important role in the historic Trường-Sơn-Hồ-Chí-Minh road system, and as the eastern starting point of the East-West Economic Corridor, which connects Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. Its history, local trade and places of remembrance offer concrete points of reference when deciding whether the city matches your travel interests. The museum offers a different focus from the market, which is also presented as a culinary stop.

River Port and Transport History

The Đông Hà military port lies on the southern bank of the Hiếu River, next to National Highway 1A and the Đông Hà Bridge. From early 1973 until the liberation of South Vietnam in April 1975, it served as an important river port and transshipment point: goods were moved from the sea route onto the road network and onward along the Trường-Sơn transport route. The port thus represents a specific chapter in the region’s transport history. Since 2013, it has been recognized as a special national monument within the historic Trường-Sơn-Hồ-Chí-Minh road system. Those interested in the history of transport and supply can find a distinct perspective on Đông Hà’s past here.

Village Communal Houses and Architecture

The historic village communal houses also offer their own points of interest. Đình làng Lập Thạch preserves architectural, artistic, historical and cultural values. Its three-tier gate is especially striking: built of brick, it features traditional architectural characteristics of the Nguyễn period. At Đình làng Nghĩa An, visitors can discover a different architectural form. The surviving building consists of a wooden central section in the nhà rường style, with three bays and two side bays, as well as a front hall with five bays and a flat roof. This design reflects the 1959 restoration. The house’s original foundation is estimated to date from the late 16th to the early 17th century; it was classified as a national monument on January 5, 1996. At Nghĩa An, the estimated early foundation, the specific architectural form and the restoration stand side by side as distinct historical aspects.

Museum and Places of Remembrance

The Quảng Trị Museum is located at 08 Nguyễn Huệ Street in Đông Hà. It displays more than 9,300 documents and artifacts, including nearly 5,000 original objects. This may help you choose according to your interests: the focus here is on collections and documents, while the village communal houses tell their story primarily through architecture and building history. The Đường 9 Martyrs’ Cemetery has two principal artistic and historical structures: a victory monument and a ceremonial area. Another place with historical significance is Nhà Vòm, a surviving aircraft shelter at Đông Hà military airfield that was used especially to shelter helicopters. These places offer different themes, from collections and architecture to the military past.
