Discover Ninh Bình: Rocks, Poetry and City History
Accommodation in Ninh Bình
Ninh Bình brings together rock formations, literature and city history in an unusual way. Traces of earlier advances of the sea remain at Kỳ Lân; Núi Non Nước is known as the “Mountain of Poetry.” Temples, a museum and the traditional woodworking of Phúc Lộc add to these themes. When planning your trip, you can focus on geological features, religious and historic buildings, crafts or dining districts. This variety gives you a concrete starting point for searching for a vacation rental: first consider which aspects of the city you want to focus on.
Geological traces and a mountain of poetry
More than 50 meters high, Kỳ Lân Mountain is in the center of Ninh Bình and shaped like a lion’s head facing north. Its slopes preserve clear traces of several earlier advances of the sea. Wave marks and sediment layers containing animal bones and shells of marine mollusks help determine the age and course of the sea’s repeated advances and retreats. Kỳ Lân also has five caves: Hang Tối, Hang Sáng, Hang Ngang, Hang Đền and Hang Trung. A Buddhist pagoda and Nghênh Phong Các are also located on the mountain. Geological evidence and cultural buildings thus come together on a named mountain in the city.
Núi Non Nước, also called Dục Thúy Sơn, is known as the “Mountain of Poetry.” The rocky landscape preserves hundreds of poems by renowned poets. Seventy-two brick and stone steps, divided into five sections, lead to the summit; from the top, visitors can take in the entire urban area of Ninh Bình. Literature, the climb and the view are three distinct things to experience together at this mountain.
Temples and a museum as ways into the city’s history
Non Nước Pagoda is in Thanh Bình Ward. It was built during the Lý dynasty under King Lý Nhân Tông by the royal priest Nguyễn Minh Không for the worship of Buddha. The temple of the cultural scholar Trương Hán Siêu is in the center of Ninh Bình and is both a landmark and a spiritual and cultural site. Built in 1998, the structure follows the chữ Đinh style. It comprises a three-bay front hall and a two-bay rear sanctuary; the two tiled roofs have upward-curving eaves. The building’s design offers a concrete glimpse of this temple’s architecture.
The Ninh Bình Museum lies south of Thúy Sơn Cultural Park. The three-story building is designed to rise from the landscape like a blooming lotus. Its displayed objects include archaeological finds from Mán Bạc. The site itself is dated to between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago. This archaeological perspective adds a much earlier layer of the region’s history to its poetry and religious buildings.
Woodworking and dining districts
The woodworking village of Phúc Lộc is in Ninh Phong Ward, southeast of the city center and about 2 km away. Alongside practical furniture, traditional decorative woodwork is produced there. This includes tea cabinets, chests and worship figures, as well as wooden objects for religious ceremonies and festivals and for the restoration of temples, pagodas and shrines. The carving is considered particularly fine. The craft thus connects everyday objects with religious and festive traditions.
Dining areas are also part of the cityscape. Several food streets and districts have developed in Ninh Bình, attracting visitors from near and far. These include Phố 8, Vân Giang Breakfast Street and the dining district of the Hoa Lư Old Quarter. Their distinct names offer concrete reference points if you also want to include dining destinations in your trip planning.
Find a vacation rental that suits your interests
The locations of the destinations mentioned can help guide your choice of a vacation rental: Kỳ Lân and the temple of Trương Hán Siêu are in the center, while Phúc Lộc is southeast of the city center, about 2 km away. If rock landscapes, temples and city history are your priorities, you can start by focusing on the city center. If woodworking is a particular focus of your trip, include Phúc Lộc in your plans. The exact address of your accommodation can then help you fit the different destinations into your daily itinerary. Ninh Bình is also on Vietnam’s north–south railway line—another point of reference for planning your trip.
