Diên Khánh is an interesting destination if you are interested in historic architecture, religious heritage and local memorial sites. Its history stretches from a citadel built in the 18th century to temples with inscriptions and annual rites. An old tree and a memorial site also tell of the importance of local remembrance.

The Thành cổ Diên Khánh and its moat

The Thành cổ Diên Khánh is located in the city and was built by Nguyễn Ánh in 1793. The military architectural complex is designed in the Vauban style and is recognized as a national monument. Its layout included a moat outside the citadel: it was three to five meters deep, and its width varied depending on the terrain. Water from the Sông Cái was channelled into the moat. Its depth, varying width and water supply give the fortress complex a concrete landscape dimension that goes beyond a description of its architecture.

Văn Miếu: construction history and Confucian heritage

Văn Miếu Diên Khánh is located in Phú Lộc Tây. It was founded in 1803 by an edict of Emperor Gia Long; construction on a large scale began in 1853, and the complex was essentially completed the following year. Two stone inscriptions date from the 11th year of Tự Đức’s reign, that is, 1858. Văn Miếu is recognized as a national monument.

Khổng Tử, the Tứ phối—Nhan Hồi, Tăng Sâm, Khổng Cấp and Mạnh Kha—and the Thập Triết—Mẫn Tử Khiên, Tử Trương, Tể Dư, Nhiễm Hữu, Ngôn Yển, Nhiễm Canh, Nhiễm Ung, Trọng Do, Bốc Thượng and Đoan Mộc Tử—are venerated there. The names of the venerated scholars and the dated stones make different aspects of the site tangible: its religious dedication and its material record.

Every year, the monument management organizes the Thánh Đản rites for Khổng Tử’s birthday on the 27th day of the eighth lunar month and the Thánh Húy rites for his death anniversary on the 18th day of the fourth lunar month. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the specific date in advance.

Temples and local traditions

The Miếu Quan Thánh Hải Nam was built as a place of worship by Chinese residents of Diên Khánh at the beginning of the 19th century. Its address is No. 78 Trần-Qúy-Cáp Street in Tổ dân phố 2. On October 14, 2010, the Miếu was designated a provincial historic-cultural monument by Decision No. 2645/QĐ-UBND. Its main rites take place every year on the 13th day of the first and fifth lunar months; here, too, it is helpful to check the specific date before planning a trip around it.

Another site of religious significance is Miếu Cây Ké, also called Miếu Thiên Y A Na or Miếu Ấp Trung. It was built in the 19th century to venerate Bà Thiên Y A Na. Its different names and dedications show how Diên Khánh’s cultural heritage is not limited to the citadel or Văn Miếu.

Memorial sites in the townscape

Cây Dầu Đôi stands near Ngã ba Thành in Diên Khánh and is up to 30 meters tall. One of its two branches shades the memorial site for Bình Tây Đại tướng Trịnh Phong. For residents, the tree has served as a familiar meeting place for generations; for visitors, it is a landmark. A single feature of the landscape thus connects a concrete description of nature with the memory of Trịnh Phong.

The Đền thờ Trần Quý Cáp stands beside the Sông-Cạn Bridge, on the site known as Gò Chết Chém. It was built in 1970 and is dedicated to Trần Quý Cáp, a patriotic scholar of the Duy-Tân movement who led local resistance to French rule. With children, details like these can open a conversation about history: a moat with a measurable depth, two dated stone inscriptions, and a tree that provides shade and serves as a landmark.

Choose a vacation rental to suit your interests

When looking for a vacation rental in Diên Khánh, you can first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: fortress architecture, Confucian heritage, religious traditions or memorial sites. This lets you decide, based on the destination, whether a cultural and historical focus suits your plans. The sites described offer different perspectives—from the architectural layout of the Thành cổ to the recurring rituals at the temples. If a particular rite is important to your plans, time your stay to coincide with its specific day in the lunar calendar.
