Mountain Landscapes and Nature Reserves

The region lies in the Qashqadaryo River basin on the western slope of the Pamir-Alai Mountains. Its nature reserves include Kitab, Gissar and Kizil-say. The Hissar Reserve protects mountain ecosystems and covers 80,986 hectares. If you are especially interested in landscapes and nature, you will find several different ways to explore them within the province.

Kitob Geological National Nature Park is located in Kitob District, on the southwestern edge of the Zarafshan Range, on the left bank of the Jindidaryo. Visitors can observe evidence of the Earth’s history and the gradual development of life there. Suvtushar Waterfall also offers a direct connection to the mountain landscape: it is located in the Gissar Reserve near the village of Suvtushar and flows into a river at an altitude of 2,100 metres. The Gissarak Reservoir, in turn, was built near the mountain village of Miraki on the Aksu River.

Shahrisabz and the Region’s History

Shahrisabz is considered the birthplace of Amir Temur. The city’s historic centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the centre is the Dorut Tilovat ensemble, a memorial complex dating from 1370 to 1371. A Friday mosque and two mausoleums enclose a shared courtyard. The ensemble’s layout and date of construction give a visit a clear historical focus.

Other historic sites in Shahrisabz include the ruins of the Ak-Saray Palace. They once formed part of Amir Timur’s medieval residence; construction began in 1380 and took 24 years. The restored palace grounds have been laid out as a park for cultural recreation and leisure. The restored Chubin Madrasah houses a history museum about the city. The Chorsu trading dome in the historic centre was probably built in the late 15th or early 16th century. A major Uzbek highway that follows the travel route of the Italian traveller Marco Polo passes through Shahrisabz.

Qarshi and other districts also bear their own traces of history. The Qarshi Bridge was built in 1583 and is considered one of the oldest bridges in Central Asia. The Odina Mosque is part of the Odina Complex in Qarshi’s old town and measures 50 metres long and 40 metres wide. In Koson District, the archaeological site of Yerqo‘rgon preserves the ruins of ancient Nakhshab, including a citadel, temples, a mausoleum and craft quarters. In Qamashi District, the Langar-Ota Mausoleum was built in the 1520s; it contains the tombs of Sheikh Muhammad Sadiq and other prominent figures.
