Al Gharbia opens up views of the vast landscapes in western Abu Dhabi. Al Dhafra, the western region of the emirate, stretches from the Liwa Desert across the west coast to offshore islands, including Sir Bani Yas Island. The desert, coast and island destinations each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your stay and how many journeys you would like to plan.

Desert, coast and cultural experiences

Al Mirfa is on the west coast of Al Dhafra, about 160 kilometres west of Abu Dhabi City. Mirfa Beach is the only developed beach in the Al Dhafra area and also hosts the Al Dhafra Watersports Festival. Admission to the beach is free; confirm the entry conditions locally before you arrive. The combination of a coastal stay and the regional festival gives Mirfa a distinctive place in your travel plans, without requiring you to assume a specific event date.

Al Dhafra has more to offer than its coastline: options include desert experiences in Liwa, wildlife watching on Sir Bani Yas Island, visits to historic forts and museums, and relaxation on the west coast. These choices lead to different day plans. Those interested in the landscape and desert can make Liwa their focus; those who want to watch wildlife can head to Sir Bani Yas Island. Forts and museums add a historical dimension. The destinations are spread across a vast region, so choosing your priorities also matters when deciding where to stay in a holiday apartment.

Getting there and getting around the region

Al Dhafra is west of Abu Dhabi City and is best reached by road. The drive to Al Dhafra usually takes about two to three hours; the journey time depends on your destination in the region. Experiences are also spread far apart within the area. A rental car therefore offers greater flexibility, especially if you would like to include several destinations in your plans. Guided tours are available for selected experiences; taxis can be an option for direct journeys. The options differ in how freely you can plan your route: a rental car gives you the flexibility to visit several destinations, while tours can accompany you on individual experiences and taxis make direct journeys possible.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first which excursions you want to take and then consider the location as part of your planning. Ask yourself whether you want your days to focus more on the beach, desert, wildlife watching or culture. If you would like to combine several of these priorities, take the distances across the vast region into account and plan your journeys around your destinations. For families with different interests, it can help to agree together on which experiences matter most. This way, you can choose a base that suits your trip, rather than looking for accommodation separately from the days you have planned.

Abu Dhabi in a broader context

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi includes the capital and its surroundings, Al Ain as the eastern region, and Al Dhafra in the west. Anyone planning to explore more of the emirate beyond Al Gharbia will find a different regional focus in Al Ain. At Al Ain Oasis, the two central falaj systems are called Al Aini and Dawood; the excavated channels are said to be 3,000 years old and continue to supply water to the plantation. Qasr Al Muwaiji is also in Al Ain. The historic building was constructed during the time of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa the First and his son Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Its courtyard houses a modern exhibition hall with a chronological exhibition about members of Abu Dhabi's ruling family. These examples are part of the eastern region and form a distinct cultural focus within the emirate.
