Mersin combines striking glimpses into the past with a waterfront that you can explore on foot or by bike in Kültür Park. Archaeology, city history and maritime themes offer different highlights for your stay. When choosing a holiday rental, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to visit museums or also set aside time for walks and bike rides by the water.

Archaeology around Yumuktepe

At the Mersin Archaeological Museum in Yenişehir, you can see a reconstruction of Yumuktepe Mound and learn about the finds recovered during excavations. The mound was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period to the present day. It is located about one kilometre northwest of Mersin city centre. The museum and the site offer two different ways to explore the long history of settlement: the museum focuses on the reconstruction and the recovered finds, while the mound itself provides a sense of place for this history. The museum is close to the coast.

Visitors who would also like to explore other subjects will find a city history museum, a naval museum and the Atatürk House Museum in Mersin.

City life and personal history

The Mustafa Erim Mersin City History Museum is housed in an almost 150-year-old example of civil architecture. Its city history section is designed to give visitors the impression of walking through Mersin in the first half of the 20th century. This offers a different perspective from the archaeological exploration of Yumuktepe: here, the city in a more recent historical period takes centre stage.

The Atatürk House Museum also connects a building with a specific episode in the city’s history. Atatürk and Latife Hanım were guests in the house, now used as a museum, for eleven days during their visit to Mersin from 20 January to 2 February 1925. On display are photographs of Atatürk’s visits to Mersin, as well as 22 personal items from the Anıtkabir Museum. The dates and exhibits make the site interesting for visitors who want to explore history through individual visits and personal objects.

Maritime themes and time by the waterfront

The Mersin Naval Museum is devoted to the history of Turkish naval warfare. It displays more than 500 objects and has a library with 800 books for researchers. The interactive hall offers digital information about the minesweeper Nusret. Visitors interested in maritime history can explore a different theme here than in the museums focused on city and archaeological history.

For outdoor activities, Kültür Park in Yenişehir is a good option: visitors can walk and cycle along the waterfront. You can plan your trip around the experiences you want—for example, museum visits or time for a ride by the water. A holiday rental in Mersin can serve as a base for whichever activities you prefer; the best location for you depends on which parts of the city you want to prioritise.

Another historic site is the Hz. Mikdat Mosque: the garden contains the tomb of Hz. Mikdat, who is said to have been among the first companions of Islam. This traditional attribution remains part of the tomb’s description. Together with the museums, this site shows the variety of ways to explore Mersin through archaeological, urban and religious history.
