Discover Karaözü through three distinctive themes: the Kızılırmak, the Şahruh Bridge and traces of earlier history. Here, the river reaches the boundaries of Sarıoğlan District; the bridge lies on the medieval route between Kayseri and Sivas. Other points of interest include Kaletepe Tumulus, the foundations of a Byzantine castle and the folk dance Çekirge. Landscape, architectural history, archaeological traces and culture offer different ways to explore the area—a good starting point for deciding what to focus on before your trip.

Kızılırmak and Şahruh Bridge

The Kızılırmak is the largest river in Turkey. At Karaözü, it reaches the boundaries of Sarıoğlan District, making it a distinctive geographical landmark for the area. The historic masonry Şahruh Bridge crosses the river in Karaözü and lies on the medieval route between Kayseri and Sivas. It is a fine example of stone architecture. Its eight arches connect the bridge’s design with the seasonal river landscape: when rainwater and snowmelt increase the flow, all eight arches can fill with water. Under these conditions, the landscape can be particularly striking in spring.

Historical traces

The history of the bridge can also be explored through a document. A vakıf deed issued in 1491/92 records that the entire village of Karaözü was endowed for the needs of the bridge built by Şahruh Bey. This entry makes the connection between the village and the structure a historical topic in its own right: the focus is not only on the bridge’s design, but also on the endowment which, according to the deed, was intended for the structure.

Foundations of a former Byzantine castle have been identified on the hill above Karaözü; the remains of the castle are not clearly visible above ground today. Kaletepe Tumulus is registered as a first-degree archaeological site. The deed, castle foundations and tumulus thus raise different historical questions from those of the stone bridge and its location by the river.

Culture in the area

The folk dance “Çekirge” is performed in Karaözü, adding a cultural dimension to its architectural and archaeological themes. The bridge and castle foundations point to history and architecture, while Çekirge points to a dance form. When planning your trip, it may help to consider whether you would rather focus on historic structures, archaeological traces or cultural expressions.

Karaözü as a base

This focus is a useful starting point when choosing a holiday rental in Karaözü. If the river and bridge are what appeal to you, the connection between landscape and architecture takes centre stage; if you are mainly interested in history, the deed, castle foundations and tumulus offer different points of interest. Çekirge provides a cultural perspective. If you are planning a family trip, you can weigh up these themes together and see whether Karaözü suits your preferred mix of river scenery, history and culture. This way, your search for a holiday rental can reflect your travel interests.
