Göksun combines an archaeologically significant town center with historic buildings and views across the Göksun Plain. Göksun Höyük lies at its heart; Panoramic Kale Park was created on the hill, offering a 360-degree view across the plain. Visitors who want to combine culture and landscape during their stay will find a range of themes to consider when planning their trip.

Göksun Höyük: History and panoramic views

The höyük is 300 meters long, 150 meters wide and 12 meters high. Excavations there uncovered painted pottery fragments from the Halaf and Ubaid periods. They are dated to approximately 5500 to 4000 BC. The long time span and the two cultures mentioned give the hill an archaeological dimension, while the park on the same höyük offers a broad view across the plain. Archaeological history and sweeping views across the plain meet in the same place.

The historic houses known as Eski Göksun Evleri also shape the character of the Höyük area. They are mostly made of adobe bricks and wood and are predominantly located there. This construction method differs markedly from the archaeological finds: while the pottery fragments point to early periods, the houses tell of a later residential tradition.

Ulu Camii and protected architectural heritage

Ulu Camii is located in Göksun city center and was built in 1922 under the direction of the then district governor, Kayserili Talat Bey, and with the support of the local population. Repairs and additions have not displaced much of its original form: the mosque has largely retained it. On December 19, 2003, the Adana Regional Council for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage protected the building under number 5448. Its construction date, state of preservation and protected status are three distinct aspects of its history, making Ulu Camii an important cultural point of interest in Göksun.

Archaeological sites in the surrounding area

Archaeological destinations with their own distinct character can also be found outside the center. Kırıkkilise is 19 kilometers from the center of Göksun district. The remains of a Roman church are preserved there; the remains of a presumably royal tomb can also be found on the southern slope.

Taşoluk is 5 kilometers from the district center. The settlement, located on state-owned land, is a first-degree archaeological site. It contains possible remains of a church, as well as marble columns with figures from their respective period. Kırıkkilise and Taşoluk therefore offer different starting points for anyone interested in archaeological traces in the nearby area as well as the history of Göksun itself.

Culture, recreation and water

Göksun Belediyesi Kültür Merkezi opened in 2022. It has an amphitheater-style conference hall with 400 seats. The cultural center thus complements Göksun’s historic buildings with a venue for culture and events.

Alparslan Türkeş Mesire Alanı is 5 kilometers from the center of Göksun district. The 44,500-square-meter site was renovated in 2016 as part of a recreation project. Its facilities include picnic areas, bungalow houses, a grass football field and an aquapark. Visitors looking for outdoor recreation or water-based activities during their stay can consider these options alongside Göksun’s historic highlights.

Adatepe Reservoir is 20 kilometers northeast of the center of Göksun district, on the Göksun Çayı. Water sports such as swimming, diving, sailing, rowing, kayaking, dragon boat racing and water skiing are possible at the lake. This range of activities offers a different potential focus from the höyük, mosque and archaeological sites. The Göksun Apple Festival was held in the square at the Göksun Belediyesi business center and took place for at least the seventh time.

Göksun as a base for your stay

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Göksun, you can make your choice based on the themes you want your trip to focus on: local history and architecture, archaeological sites in the surrounding area, or recreation and water sports.
