Kaledibi combines highland scenery with a layered castle history. Bedrik is a highland settlement that belongs to Kaledibi and is located in the Amanos Mountains. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Kaledibi, you can consider whether the highlands or the area’s history best suits your travel plans.

Highlands and Winter Character

Kaledibi Yaylası is described as scenic and having clean air; its tourism potential is also highlighted. A 2020 study classifies it among Hatay’s frequently visited highland areas. The yayla is thus a highland landscape alongside Bedrik, a highland settlement belonging to Kaledibi in the Amanos Mountains. Bedrik is reported to lie at an elevation of 1,000 to 1,250 metres. These two points of reference convey different aspects of the highland landscape: the yayla as a highland area and Bedrik as a settlement in the mountains.

Winter is also part of the local character. Residents report that it snows in Kaledibi every year. During official winter operations, roads in Kaledibi were opened to traffic. At the same time, residents reported in 2022 that roads were closed whenever it snowed, affecting the connection to the city centre. So if you are planning a winter trip, it is a good idea to check current road conditions before setting out.

Castle Sites and Historic Routes

Şalen Castle

Şalen Castle stands on a steep, rocky hill in the rural Kaledibi Mahallesi. It is believed that the castle has existed since Hellenistic times. In the past, a flag festival was held in the first week of July, when a flag was raised at the castle. This brings together two different time periods: an assumed early origin and a celebration described as a former practice.

A 2023 report documented earthquake damage. On March 24, 2023, the path leading to Şalen Castle was closed because of damage. Before visiting, it is advisable to check whether the path is currently accessible.

La Roche Guillaume

La Roche Guillaume is in the village of Kaledibi and was also called “Hajar Choghlan” in Arabic chronicles from the Crusades. The fortress is located in the foothills of the Amanos Mountains at an elevation of 1,250 metres. It occupied a strategic position: it overlooked the valley of the road leading north from Antioch and monitored the mountain passes. Its elevated location and its relationship to the road and passes are both part of the fortress’s historical context.

After a period of transition whose timing is not specified, La Roche Guillaume passed from the possession of the de la Roche family into the hands of the Templar Order. A former route historically connected La Roche Guillaume with the Pas de la Portelle. These historical references give the local story a temporal and geographical dimension without implying that this is a hiking route today.

Weighing Up Kaledibi as a Holiday Destination

The highlands, settlement location, and castle history give Kaledibi a range of different points of interest. If you enjoy combining scenic interests with historical topics, these aspects may play a part in your choice of destination. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether Kaledibi’s highland and historical character suits your travel interests. If you plan to visit Şalen Castle, take note of the information about the path and its date, and check its current accessibility in advance.
