Manavgat reveals its history on two different levels: Zindan Castle represents archaeological building remains by the river, while the Manavgat City Museum presents the city’s history through objects. Between the tower, fortification walls and cemetery on the one hand, and the museum’s perspective on the other, a distinct cultural focus takes shape for your stay. Which interests you more—the surviving complex, the city’s history, or both?

Zindan Castle: Building Remains by the River

The surviving remains of Zindan Castle lie on the west bank of the Manavgat River in the Eski Hisar neighbourhood. The complex includes a tower, fortification walls and a cemetery. These different features give the site more than one historical point of interest: the tower and walls identify it as a fortified complex, while the cemetery adds another aspect of the place. The remains probably date from the early Roman period, the 1st century AD. Zindan Castle is designated as an archaeological site of the first and third degrees. Its location, surviving structures and cautiously phrased dating together define its cultural and historical character.

As part of a riverbank improvement project, a walking path and lighting were installed at Zindan Castle. If you plan to include the path in your itinerary, check its current condition on site.

The City’s History at the Manavgat City Museum

The Manavgat City Museum was established beneath the Rauf Denktaş Bridge. Its purpose is to pass on the values from Manavgat’s long history to future generations. The design was intended to present the city’s entire history through objects. This gives the museum a different emphasis from the archaeological remains of Zindan Castle: one focuses on surviving structures, while the other presents the city’s history through objects. If you plan to visit the museum, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.

Former River and Bicycle Services

River-based municipal transport also has a history. The “Nehirden Denize” project offered departures from beneath the Tarihi Köprü in the city centre and from municipal stops near Zindan Castle. The riverbus’s historical route was 8.5 kilometres long and was served by two boats operating in shifts to transport passengers. The route and shift schedule were part of the former service; if a river trip is important to your plans today, check what is currently available in advance.

Another former municipal service was the MANBİS bicycle rental system, with seven stations. These included locations near Zindan Castle and Cumhuriyet Square. Other listed stations were in Side, Sorgun, Titreyengöl, Boğaz Otel and at the Akdeniz University vocational school. Bicycles could be rented at the stations through camera-equipped kiosks using a credit card or a MANBİS membership card. For cycling today, check current services.
