Archaeological traces and protected landscapes give Pınarcık an unusual character. Particularly appealing are the miniature canopy tombs and the finds at Lake Bafa, whose visibility depends on the water level. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: you can focus on the area's architectural history or choose the landscape and its water levels as your guiding theme.

Landscape and traces along Lake Bafa

Pınarcık has first-degree protected areas of both archaeological and natural significance. A building listed as a cultural asset is also located within a first-degree archaeological and natural protected area. Çayır, a settlement associated with Pınarcık directly on Lake Bafa, is a green holiday settlement with around 30 to 40 houses. The reed beds around Çayır are home to numerous bird species.

The area of Çayır is home to Ioniapolis, a harbour dating from antiquity that is now submerged. When the water level falls, remains of the settlement become visible. Half-finished ancient column drums can also be seen on the shore of Lake Bafa, near Pınarcık Yaylası, when the water level is low. They were awaiting onward transport to Didyma. The two finds tell different stories: Ioniapolis points to a submerged settlement, while the column drums reflect their intended transport. If you plan to visit these relics, take the respective water-level conditions into account.

Architecture and local history

Pınarcık's cemetery contains miniature canopy tombs made of rubble and undressed stones; five of these tombs are partially preserved. Each rests on four pillars connected by arches, with a small dome in the centre. Their compact form makes the individual components particularly easy to see: the pillars, arches and dome together form a small canopy.

Other structures are also listed as monuments: a chapel, a castle, a tower, a quarry, an inn and a cistern. Pınarcık also has traditional Muğla chimneys. Some traditional buildings in Pınarcık incorporate reused building materials. Together with the miniature tombs, these features reveal the area's multifaceted building culture, from unusually small tomb forms to a variety of historic structures.

Çayır's history extends beyond its present-day role as a holiday settlement: before 1950, Çayır was an important trade route. The tradition of the Kaddak Festival has also been maintained in Pınarcık since the early years of the Republic. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact date in advance.
