Milas combines ancient remains with historic buildings that are still in use today. In the city centre, the Hekatomnos Monument and sanctuary are linked to a history associated with the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus: they are considered the only surviving example built earlier than that mausoleum and on the same scale. For your travel plans, Milas offers a focus on city history and culture, complemented by nature experiences in the surrounding area.

Ancient traces and museum finds

The Uzunyuva Museum Complex includes the Hekatomnos Tomb Monument, the Hekatomneion Sanctuary, the Milas House Museum and the Milas Carpet Museum. The Hekatomnos Frieze Sarcophagus is considered a unique example in classical and Hellenistic Anatolia. The Milas Museum also displays gold objects from excavations at Stratonikea, terracotta oil lamps from Iasos, finds from Milas and its surroundings, as well as sculptures and sculpted heads. The museum collection thus brings together finds from different places and periods.

The Gümüşkesen Mausoleum is another notable historic site in Milas. It stands in the Gümüşlük neighbourhood at the foot of Mount Sodra. The monument is believed to be a small copy of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Baltalı Kapı, in turn, is the only surviving structure of the city wall of ancient Mylasa, today’s Milas. It takes its name from the relief of a double-headed axe on the keystone.

Mosques and historic buildings

The Ulu Mosque in the Hoca Bedrettin neighbourhood was built in 1378 and is the largest mosque in Milas. The Belen Mosque on Hisarbaşı Hill dates from the 14th century and incorporates building elements from ancient structures. At the Ağa Mosque in the Hacı Abdi neighbourhood, the minaret was built in 1885.

Another example is Çöllüoğlu Han, built in 1719–1720. The rectangular caravanserai has two storeys and an inner courtyard. The restoration project, begun in 2010, has been completed. Many historic houses also shape the cityscape: most date from the 19th century or the early years of the 20th century, have been restored and remain in use.

City history, nature and local cuisine

If you would like to balance culture and outdoor activity in different ways, you can combine Milas with a nature excursion in the surrounding area. Southwest of Milas, Gökçeler Gorge offers an 8 km route for outdoor sports and hiking, with waterfalls and ponds. Its length is a specific point of reference for planning your day; the gorge offers a different focus from the city’s historic sites.

Local cuisine is also part of the destination’s character: Milas köfte is considered a speciality in the centre of Milas. For a trip with others, you can therefore decide whether museums, mosques and historic buildings—or nature and regional cuisine as well—should shape your stay. Milas is accessible from all parts of Türkiye via long-distance bus connections. When looking for a holiday rental, you can choose Milas as a base for your travel plans and make your decision according to which of these interests matters most to you.
