Altıntaş: Parks, History and Nature
Accommodation in Altıntaş
Altıntaş combines municipal green spaces in town with historic memorial sites and natural attractions in the district. Its history dates back to the Early Bronze Age; nearby, there is also Seljuk architectural heritage and memorials to events from 1922. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the green spaces in town and the district’s attractions as separate points of interest.
Parks and Paths in Town
Şehitler Parkı is located in the Cumhuriyet Mahallesi neighborhood. Its amenities include well-maintained green spaces and playgrounds and sports facilities for children; the park also provides space for social events. In the Hürriyet Mahallesi neighborhood, 30 Ağustos Zafer Parkı offers similar facilities: it too has well-maintained green spaces, playgrounds and sports facilities for children, and space for social events. The parks are in different neighborhoods, while the amenities described are similar.
The centrally located Altıntaş Mesire Alanı complements these green spaces with walking and running paths with a hard surface. They are suitable for exercise in the morning or evening. The area also has spacious covered picnic and barbecue pavilions. Playgrounds are available too; as facilities like these may change, it is best to check the current situation before your visit. The parks in town are therefore distinct from the Mesire area, which brings together paths, picnic and barbecue areas, and places to play.
History and Memorial Sites
The ancient name SOA is also recorded in coins and written sources relating to the Altıntaş district. Nearby, Çakırsaz Hanı is located in the village of Çakırsaz, in the Altıntaş district. The caravanserai dates from the 13th to 14th centuries, during the Seljuk period, and adds a medieval building to the area’s history.
Several memorial sites are located in Zafertepeçalköy, in the Altıntaş district. The Zafer Anıtı stands on a hill 1,181 meters high. It was there that Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk personally directed the Battle of Başkomutan on August 30, 1922. The Şehit Sancaktar Mehmetçik Anıtı stands on Berberçam Tepesi in Zafertepeçalköy. It symbolizes the fallen and veterans of the Turkish War of Independence, as well as the spirit of the national struggle.
The Kırık Kağnı ve Üç Komutan Anıtı commemorates August 31, 1922, when Atatürk, Fevzi Çakmak, and İsmet İnönü decided on a broken ox cart to march to İzmir. Also in Zafertepeçalköy, the Yüzbaşı Şekip Efendi Şehitliği was established in memory of Captain Şekip Efendi from Harput and his comrades, who fell on August 29, 1922. The memorial sites differ in the events and people they commemorate, each giving the district its own historical connection.
There are also traces of history on Çal Tepesi, east of the Altıntaş district: the remains of an ancient Roman theater and a ruined settlement are located there. Together with Çakırsaz Hanı and the memorial sites, these places represent different historical periods, from antiquity to the events of 1922.
Landscape, Water and Birdwatching
Nilüfer Vadisi is a natural recreation area in the Altıntaş district. Rich vegetation, an aquatic ecosystem, and a peaceful atmosphere define the valley. Its damp, green landscape offers migratory and resident birds suitable habitats and feeding grounds, making it well suited to birdwatching. Murat Dağı offers a different experience: Altıntaş’s natural neighbor rises to 2,312 meters and features extensive forests, thermal springs, and ecotourism potential.
Çalköy Göleti, also known as Zafertepeçalköy Göleti, is an irrigation and recreational reservoir right next to the Zafer Anıtı and the historic national park grounds. It is also a quiet place for picnics and walks for locals and visitors. Here, recreation by the water sits alongside the immediate proximity of a memorial site. Nilüfer Vadisi, meanwhile, is especially known for its bird habitats, while forests and thermal springs are part of the landscape around Murat Dağı.
Choose the Right Location for Your Trip
When looking for a holiday apartment in Altıntaş, you can first consider whether you would rather focus on the municipal green spaces in town or on the district’s historic and natural attractions. The two parks and the centrally located Mesire Alanı provide a connection to the town; the caravanserai, memorial sites, valley, reservoir, and mountain add a range of attractions in the surrounding area.
