Şirince combines a terraced village setting with Greek local history, churches and cuisine that also includes Cretan influences. The village lies on a hill; around 200 houses still date from the Greek period. This gives Şirince a clear focus when choosing your holiday destination: you can put village culture and history at the centre of your stay, or combine the village with hiking and countryside experiences.

Historic Village Setting and Cultural Sites

The sloping terrain shapes the layout of the houses: they stand parallel to the hillside, creating a terraced village setting. Because of its traditional settlement pattern, Şirince was designated a historic site in 1984; a conservation plan protects the village. In 2023, Şirince received the “Best Tourism Village” award in Türkiye. The blend of Turkish and Greek village cultures is considered a defining feature of the place.

The Aya Yani Church, also known as the Church of St John, is part of the village’s history. It was built in 1805. It was probably built on the remains of an older church destroyed in the 1800 earthquake; an inscription records a further restoration in 1832. Today, the church is in the garden of a private property. The Church of St Demetrius is also part of Şirince’s cultural heritage.

Taş Mektep was a school dating from the early 20th century and now serves as a museum on the development of education in Türkiye. The Nesin Science and Math Village offers a different thematic focus: its three areas for mathematics, art and philosophy are combined in a single campus. This allows you to consider a range of interests in history, education and culture when planning your trip.

Hiking Trails and Countryside

The Efeler Yolu is a multi-section hiking trail with a total length of 500 kilometres. It connects Şirince with numerous other villages and ends in Meryemana near Selçuk. If you are looking for a longer hiking route, you can include this trail in your travel plans.

Another described option is the 14-kilometre Şirince–Selçuk–Ephesus Ancient City–Pamucak Beach route. It is considered moderately difficult; walking it takes around five to six hours. The route follows a paved main road and can also be cycled. These details help you distinguish between a multi-section long-distance trail and a single, clearly defined route.

Along the access road to Şirince, you can see centuries-old olive trees, kermes oaks, mastic shrubs, terebinth trees and Aleppo pines. The variety of tree and shrub species makes the landscape apparent even as you travel along this road.

Aegean Cuisine and Şirince Wines

Seasonal Aegean and Cretan dishes are served in Şirince. These include radika, fried wild greens, Şevketi bostanı and dishes stuffed with squash blossoms. If you are interested in regional food culture, you will find specific dishes here rather than a single menu that stays the same throughout the year.

The local selection also includes wines, among them varieties made from fruit essences such as mulberry, blackberry, melon and strawberry. Wine cellars are located on the ground floors of houses, and visitors are encouraged to visit them. Bazaar stalls also sell handicrafts, soap, olive oil, pekmez, honey, jam and souvenirs. During your stay, you can explore regional products and different culinary traditions alongside the historic sites.

Getting There

Şirince can be reached via Selçuk and the bypass from both İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport and the intercity bus station. The different highlights can help guide your travel plans without limiting you to just one type of excursion.
