Kazandere combines a distinctive local history with a Hıdrellez tradition passed down locally. The village was formerly called Kazanlı Köyü and was renamed Kazandere. Toward the end of the Ottoman Empire, the settlement was founded by immigrants from the territory of what is now Bulgaria. Hıdrellez is also called “Derlez” here and is considered a tradition handed down by ancestors. For travellers interested in local culture, this brings two specific topics into focus: the history of the settlement and the details of Hıdrellez customs.

Hıdrellez: Rituals in Detail

One particularly vivid Hıdrellez custom began before sunrise. People swung on a swing attached to a mulberry tree, saying, “Derdim aşağı, kendim yukarı.” The saying was intended, in essence, to shake off worries and bring good luck for the coming year. The tradition links a specific time of day, a mulberry tree and a spoken wish. This precise sequence is what makes the custom so vivid.

The preparations were also clearly defined: the day before, 40 different herbs were gathered and boiled. The remnants were strained and kept for the bathwater. Other customs focused on health and wishes. People rolled in the grass to gain good health and rid themselves of misfortune and dizziness; wishes were placed beneath a rose bush and expressed through symbolic representations. Different concerns thus emerge within the same tradition: good luck for the coming year, health and personal wishes.

A Story by the Streambed

A local oral tradition takes us to the streambed of Kazandere: a large cauldron is said to have stood by a spring there. When a small child was at risk of drowning in it, the cauldron was sealed and the site was turned into a well. This story adds a local history centred on a spring, a cauldron and a well to the festival customs.

A specific festival is also tied to a date: a Hıdrellez celebration took place in Kazandere on 24 May 2015, attended by Kadir Albayrak, Mayor of the Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality.

Planning Your Stay

Kazandere is 35 km from the centre of Süleymanpaşa. The road leading to Kazandere is paved. These details offer different points of reference: the distance gives the village’s position relative to the centre, while the road information describes access. If your itinerary also includes the centre of Süleymanpaşa, the distance provides a concrete reference point when choosing your base. If Kazandere’s history and Hıdrellez customs are your focus, you can take these topics into account when choosing a holiday rental in Kazandere. If you plan to visit for a particular celebration, check the event date in advance.
