In Sütlüce, a Balkan holiday tradition passed down for centuries and a distinctive Çevirme cuisine are among the special reasons to discover the town. During the Şeker ve Kulaç Şenliği, children line up in long rows and collect sweets, chocolate, desserts and similar foods from adults. The festival takes place on the eve of every Bayram holiday. If you would like to experience this tradition, check the exact Bayram date for your travel year before planning your stay.

Holiday Traditions and Local History

The settlement’s roots date back to 1927–1928, when Sütlüce’s foundations were laid by the settlement of migrants from the Kırcaali region of Bulgaria. Later, the settlement of Pomaks from the Sergen region in Vize district added to the town’s cultural diversity. This history complements its long-standing holiday tradition with further insight into the people who shaped Sütlüce.

The Şeker ve Kulaç Şenliği connects the eve of Bayram with a specific custom for children. At the 2024 celebration, clown and music groups were also brought in to entertain the children. The programme listed for the 98th edition in 2026 included a Kulaç edition, the opening of a memory room in the cultural centre, children’s entertainment, face painting and competitions. Thus, in addition to the tradition, each edition features different programme activities.

The route described for the 2024 sweet collection ran along Deli Ayşe Sokak, Karşıyaka, Acıpıtırak Sokak and Tonka Sokak. This street sequence may change from one edition to another. There is also a time-specific indication of the festival’s scale: a report on the 2024 celebration mentioned thousands of people from Sütlüce, the surrounding area and other cities.

Balkan Cuisine and Çevirme

The local Balkan cuisine includes immigrant börek and other pastries. Another culinary specialty is goat meat at Çevirmeci Ömer Usta, a restaurant in Sütlüce that specialises in it. The meat is prepared especially in a kara oven: cooking takes about four hours, and the meat is turned every 30 minutes.

The selection described in 2024 included cuts such as leg, kidney fat, sweetbreads, kokoreç and head. The seasonal opening period is listed as March to June. Check directly for current opening hours and the menu before your visit. This allows you to plan the culinary part of your trip around the stated season, without assuming that the restaurant will be open on your preferred dates.

What Sütlüce’s Layout Reveals

Alongside its festivals and cuisine, the settlement’s layout is another distinctive feature: Sütlüce is planned, with wide streets and no dead ends. If you choose where to stay based not only on an event but also on the character of the town, you can take this layout into account as part of the overall picture.

When choosing a holiday rental in Sütlüce, your travel dates are especially relevant if you want to experience the festival or seasonal cuisine. Plan your festival visit around the eve of the relevant Bayram; check Çevirmeci Ömer Usta’s current opening separately. If both experiences matter to you, compare both sets of dates before finalising your trip.
