Kıyıköy: Black Sea Coast and Byzantine History
Accommodation in Kıyıköy
On the Black Sea coast, Kıyıköy combines striking landforms with a long history of architecture. The town lies east of the Yıldız Mountains, also known as the Istranca Mountains, on a ridge between Pabuçdere to the north and Kazandere to the south. Like a peninsula, Kıyıköy extends into the sea as a headland. The coast, waterways and historic buildings offer different focal points for a trip.
Coast, streams and wooded areas
Important sections of Pabuçdere and Kazandere have been designated first-degree nature conservation areas from the points where they flow into the Black Sea at Kıyıköy. The forests are also part of the landscape: areas entirely covered with forest lie to the north, south and west of the town. Oaks predominate there; hornbeams and beeches are also widespread. Alongside the two streams, the coastal landscape and wooded surroundings offer distinct nature-related themes for planning a trip.
Byzantine fortress and Ottoman buildings
Kıyıköy Castle is a Byzantine fortress from the 6th century, built during the reign of Justinian. It stands on a slope descending towards the sea, between Kazandere to the south and Pabuçdere to the north. The surviving sections of wall are approximately 2.20 metres thick and about 2.50 metres high. These approximate measurements give the fortress’s history a tangible architectural dimension.
Nearby is the Aya Nikola Monastery, on the Papuçdere road on the southern slope, 700 metres from Kıyıköy. It is considered one of the finest examples of Byzantine rock-cut monasteries. Kıyıköy Mosque and Liman Hamamı are buildings from the late Ottoman period. Together, these sites represent different historical periods, from the Byzantine fortress and rock-cut monastery to the late Ottoman buildings.
Beaches and activities on the water
There are long, clean sandy beaches on both sides of Kıyıköy. Two separate beaches lie at the mouths of Pabuçdere and Kazandere and are often visited by local and international tourists. Beach conditions and services vary by season; check what applies to your travel dates before you go.
Trout, carp and mullet can be caught in both streams. Motorboat and rowing-boat trips are also possible on Pabuçdere and Kazandere. Fishing and boat trips are therefore options on both waterways; camping is also possible alongside Pabuçdere. Camping rules and facilities may vary by season. Check these, as well as specific boat-trip options, before your trip.
Local food and accommodation
Recommended local treats include freshly caught fish grilled by local fishermen and baked tahini halva for dessert. Kıyıköy has fish restaurants and cafés suitable for a day visit. The catch and restaurant availability vary by season; individual establishments’ opening arrangements may also change. If you are planning a meal out, check current opening times in advance.
Accommodation is available in Kıyıköy; check directly before your trip to confirm current availability. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: beach days, activities on the streams, wooded landscapes or historic buildings. Then compare the location details for each accommodation with your own plans. If you are travelling with children, you can consider everyone’s interests: the beach, river activities and architectural history offer different themes for planning a trip together.
