Uzunköprü brings together the history of a newly founded town, striking architecture and cultural sites. The Uzunköprü Bridge spans the Ergene River in Uzunköprü District, in Edirne Province; the river runs along the edge of the town. The mosque, church, fountains and museum offer different perspectives on the place, from architectural details to everyday objects from times past.

The Bridge and the Town’s History

The history of the Muradiye Mosque is closely linked to the beginnings of Ergene: Sultan Murad II had it built alongside the bridge in 1443 in the newly founded town. At the bridge itself, take a closer look at its arches. They are decorated with geometric designs, depictions of plants and animals, and central or Rumi palmettes. Along with its span across the Ergene, this gives the bridge a distinctive decorative character.

The Freedom Monument is also part of the town’s history. It commemorates the proclamation of the Second Constitutional Era and was erected on 11 December 1908 at the end of the bridge facing the district. After restoration, the monument was opened to visitors on 11 December 2012. The two dates mark different chapters: the monument’s construction and its later opening after restoration.

Religious Architecture and Fountains

The Orthodox Church of Aziz Ioannis, also known as the Vaftizci Yahya Church, was built in 1875. The Greeks who lived in Uzunköprü at the time built it in honour of Saint Ioannis Prodromos. A three-aisled basilica, it has a central nave whose frescoes depict the twelve apostles individually. After restoration was completed in 2013, the church reopened on 11 May 2013; today it serves as a cultural and arts centre.

In the courtyard of the Muradiye Mosque stands an octagonal ablution fountain with a pyramidal roof and eight taps. You will find another fountain in the middle of the bazaar, at Telli Fountain Square, which is named after it. It is made from a single block of solid marble. Its decorations feature motifs from the Tulip Era, including cypress and Istanbul tulip designs. Together, the two fountains show how differently form and ornament can be read in these structures.

The Museum and Visitor Interests

The town museum is housed in a two-storey historic building with six rooms. Exhibits include historic coins, weapons, typewriters, radios, cameras and copperware. If you enjoy looking at tangible objects, the museum offers a different way to explore the past than the architectural sites: the collection ranges from coins and weapons to devices used in communication and everyday life. Families planning cultural discoveries together can look out for a variety of details, such as the church’s frescoes, the bridge’s decorations or the objects in the museum.
