Uğurlu: Archaeology, Coast and Village History
Accommodation in Uğurlu
Uğurlu on Gökçeada combines a very long settlement history with beaches and a coastline said to be the place where the sun sets latest in Turkey. Nearby is the archaeological settlement of Uğurlu-Zeytinlik; in the village itself, a fishing harbour and more recent settlement history are part of the local character. This offers several themes to shape your holiday plans around: archaeology, coastal scenery and village life. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your days.
A settlement history dating back to the Neolithic
The settlement of Uğurlu-Zeytinlik is about 8,800 years old and is considered the earliest known settlement on the East Aegean islands. Future research may further refine this archaeological classification. Excavations have identified six cultural layers. The oldest, Layer VI, dates to 6800–6600 BCE and belongs to the aceramic Neolithic.
The two dates refer to different things: about 8,800 years is the approximate age of the settlement, while 6800–6600 BCE dates the oldest identified layer. Uğurlu-Zeytinlik Höyük is considered a key site for understanding the emergence of Neolithic ways of life in Europe and the relationships between the Aegean islands, Anatolia and the Balkans during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. The mound is 1 km north of the village. Please check access to the excavation site separately before visiting.
Beaches and evening light
Uğurlu Beach is described as the beach closest to Turkey’s westernmost point. Accordingly, this coastline is considered the place where the sun sets latest in Turkey; the exact time shifts with the seasons. A colourful landscape can also be seen at sunset from the hill above the village. Weather and the time of year affect the view.
Gizli Liman is nearby: the beach has fine sand and stretches out in front of pine trees. Its 750 m stretch of coastline is free of buildings. Yuvalı’s beaches offer another option and are within walking distance of Uğurlu. The precise route and walking time may vary. One route description estimates the walk between Uğurlu Plajı and Gizli Liman at 15–20 minutes; pace, weather and trail conditions affect the duration.
Routes and getting your bearings locally
The described route to Gizli Liman passes through Uğurlu; turn right at the fishing harbour. Check road and access conditions locally. Uğurlu’s harbour is one of Gökçeada’s three harbours and is used mainly by fishermen. It is both a practical landmark in the village and part of its local character.
The rock tombs can also be located using specific directions: From Aydıncık Beach, drive towards Uğurlu; after 4 km, a site surrounded by stone walls is on the right. Signage may change, so it is a good idea to get your bearings locally.
Village life and choosing where to stay
Uğurlu was settled in 1984 by villagers from the regions of Muğla and Burdur–Bucak, who worked in agriculture and livestock farming. In Uğurlu, Mutlu Keçiler Çiftliği raises Saanen goats and has organic dairy products as well as semi-open barns. These details add an agricultural dimension to the picture of the village.
Behind Uğurlu Beach is Uğurlu Çamlık Kamp Alanı, a campsite run by the village head. There are shaded pitches and areas to relax among the pine trees. Check that the campsite is operating and that the described areas are available before your trip.
When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to compare two specific reference points: Yuvalı’s beaches are within walking distance of Uğurlu, while Gökçeada town centre is 25 km away. The walking route and time to Yuvalı, as well as travel time to the town centre, may vary. Plan according to the destinations and routes you would like to prioritise.
