Gülpınar combines two distinct travel highlights: the sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus, also known as Smintheion, and the public sand beach, Gülpınar Halk Plajı. The sand beach offers a different focus from the archaeological remains. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Gülpınar, you can first consider whether your trip will focus more on culture, the beach, or both.

Smintheion and the History of the Troad

The sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus is located in the town of Gülpınar, in Ayvacık district. It preserves building remains from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, as well as traces of a Chalcolithic settlement. Archaeometric dating places its occupation at approximately 5200 to 4800 BC. The Chalcolithic settlement represents an era of the Troad that predates the time of Troy. Thus, very early settlement traces and the sanctuary's later architectural remains belong to different periods.

After the Temple of Athena in Troy, the sanctuary is described as the second most important in the Troad. Within the Anatolian cults of Apollo, the temple is also considered the only example marked by the mouse symbol. This gives you two different ways to understand its significance: the sanctuary's place in the Troad and its distinctive feature in connection with the cults of Apollo.

Reliefs and the Temple's Design

The reliefs of the Temple of Apollo Smintheus take up the theme of the Trojan War as described in Homer's Iliad. The reliefs are 120 metres long in total; 24 metres have been uncovered so far. Comparing these two measurements shows the difference between the total length and the section uncovered to date.

The architecture is also part of the sanctuary's history: a section of the temple was raised during restoration work to reveal its architectural form. When exploring Smintheion, you can therefore turn your attention both to the narrative theme of the reliefs and to the temple's reconstructed form.

A Sanctuary with Various Components

The sanctuary includes an altar where sacrificial animals were slaughtered and offered to the gods, as well as a bridge built for people who came to pray and visit the sanctuary. A sacred road is also part of Smintheion. Streets with sculptures and inscriptions add to the picture. Taken together, these features reveal different aspects: sacrificial practices, routes to the sanctuary, and the design of its streets.

The Roman baths were used for ritual cleansing and bathing. Water channels were built to supply the baths. The sanctuary also includes heroa, or halls of honour, and houses described as villas. The baths and water channels point to the site's water supply and ritual use; the heroa, altar, and sacred road add further elements of the sanctuary. Smintheion cannot, therefore, be reduced to just the temple and its reliefs.

Culture and Coast in Gülpınar

Gülpınar Halk Plajı is a public sand beach, with several campsites around the site. This offers a clearly distinct coastal highlight alongside Smintheion's cultural history. As you plan your trip, you can weigh up whether to focus on the archaeological remains, the beach, or both.
