Orhangazi combines a lively olive-growing tradition with historic buildings and experiences throughout the district. In town, the preserved hamam and cultural institutions tell stories of the past and present; in the district, the shores of Lake İznik, a picnic area and a thermal bath complex are also part of the region’s character. When choosing your holiday apartment, it helps to decide what you want to focus on first: would you like to centre your stay on culture and events, or include the lakeshore and other destinations in the district?

Olive Festival: Harvest, Competitions and Regional Cuisine

The traditional Orhangazi Olive Festival has been held every year since 1978 during the first week of November, at the beginning of the olive harvest. The competitions cover not only olive groves and olives, but also dishes made with olive oil, poems and essays. The winners receive awards. In this way, agricultural themes and creative contributions come together at the same festival.

At the festival, local producers offer locally grown olives and olive oils, as well as regional specialities made with them. If you are interested in Orhangazi’s culinary scene, this combination of harvest, produce and dishes provides a practical starting point for planning your trip. The festival is a recurring tradition; check the dates for the relevant edition before travelling if you want to plan your stay around it.

Hamam and Local History

Orhangazi’s historic hamam was built after 1330 by Sultan Orhan Bey and has survived to this day. Its architecture bears traces of Seljuk and Ottoman influences. The hamam is registered and protected as a historic monument. This single building offers a glimpse of both the town’s long history and the blending of different architectural traditions.

The history of the nearby square also includes a mosque that was burned down and destroyed by Greek troops in 1922. Its foundations were uncovered in 1993 during the redevelopment of Cumhuriyet Square. These dates provide a specific historical context for the area around the hamam without conflating the two buildings.

Museum, Library and Cultural Centre

The Eurasia Ethnography Foundation houses the Orhangazi Ethnography Museum and the Marmara Research Library. Foundation members publish books and organise exhibitions. The Orhangazi Culture and Youth Centre began operating on 21 November 2022 and has exhibition spaces, a library and an e-sports area. These places offer a range of cultural points of interest, from ethnography and research to exhibitions and digital leisure activities. Check the latest opening and programme information before planning a visit.

Lake İznik and Destinations in the District

Lake İznik is considered the largest natural lake in the Marmara Region and the fifth-largest natural lake in Türkiye. Orhangazi district shares its shoreline with the neighbouring district of İznik. The lakeshore has picnic areas, tourist facilities and excursion spots. These destinations are in the surrounding district and should not all be assumed to be in the town centre.

The nearby Ilıpınar Hill is about two kilometres south of Orhangazi and two kilometres west of Lake İznik. Ilıpınar is considered to be a settlement site dating back about 8,000 years. Nadır picnic area, in the district, is set among pine and oak trees beside a natural spring and is promoted as a public picnic spot. The lake, archaeological history and a wooded picnic setting therefore offer options for different interests.

In Orhangazi district, Keramet Thermal Springs has an outdoor pool filled with natural, sulphurous thermal water. The water averages 30°C in both summer and winter. Check local conditions and access before travelling. Zeytin cafés are also regarded as stopping places for visitors on tourist routes in the district. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, take the destinations you want to shape your stay around into account when considering its location.
