Karacabey combines historic mosques and a distinctive cheese-making tradition with natural attractions in the district of the same name. The Ulu Mosque is in the center; other buildings have their own names and stories. At district level, there are also the Karacabey Longoz, the Kocaçay Delta and Lake Uluabat. Eskikaraağaç adds its own distinctive touch with its stork festival. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to make an initial decision: should the trip focus mainly on the town center and its history, or are the district’s landscapes and village destinations the main draw?

Mosques with Different Stories

The Ulu Mosque in the center of Karacabey is classified as a Grade 1 protected monument. The Kümbetli Mosque, also called the Tümbekli Mosque, is considered the oldest historic building in Karacabey. The İmaret Mosque offers another historical perspective: it is also known as the Karacabey Mosque and is called the Kurşunlu Mosque in historical records. The Dayı Karacabey family built it in 1457, during the reign of Mehmed II, in memory of Dayı Karacabey. The mosques therefore reflect different aspects: the protected status of the Ulu Mosque, the age attributed to the Kümbetli Mosque, and the dated construction and commemorative history of the İmaret Mosque.

Mihalıç Cheese and Höşmerim

Mihalıç cheese is said to have been made first in Karacabey; the district’s former name, Mihalıç, also comes from the cheese. Höşmerim is considered a dessert from Karacabey and is made with fresh, unsalted Mihalıç cheese. Together, the cheese and dessert link a tradition about their origins with a specific dish and its named ingredient. This culinary tradition adds a distinct local theme to the area’s architectural history. If regional food culture is also of interest when planning your trip, Karacabey can be explored through more than just its mosques and landscapes.

Longoz, Delta and Birdlife

The Karacabey Longoz, the largest of Turkey’s three major longoz wetlands, lies in Karacabey district. Approximately 250 bird species live there. Twelve bird species breed in the Longoz Delta, including pelicans, black storks, flamingos and swans; some of these are considered potentially endangered. The two figures offer different insights: the approximately 250 species describe the birdlife in the Longoz, while the twelve species refer to the delta’s breeding birds.

The formation of this landscape is also striking: sea waves and river water create a sand barrier that prevents the river from flowing into the sea. The dammed-up water spreads out, forming the Kocaçay Delta and the Karacabey Longoz. East of Yeniköy, at the mouth of the Kocadere, lies a small delta formed from alluvial deposits. It is home to the two lagoon lakes, Arap Çiftliği and Dalyan.

Eskikaraağaç and Lake Uluabat

Eskikaraağaç, a village in Karacabey district, was named a European Stork Village by the European Nature Heritage Foundation. The stork festival takes place there every year at the end of May. The park at the entrance to Eskikaraağaç has a birdwatching tower and an observation house with a small museum. The festival and the named observation facilities offer different points of interest: late May is a recurring occasion to plan a trip around, while the tower and museum also connect the village with birdwatching. If you would like to plan your trip around the stork festival, check the specific festival dates in advance.

At Lake Uluabat, you can go for a walk and take photographs at sunset. These activities give a stay in nature its own focus: a lakeside route and subjects in the evening light.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Accommodation

Karacabey district lies at the intersection of the Bursa–Çanakkale, Bursa–Balıkesir and İzmir highways. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth treating the district and the town center as separate areas of focus. First decide whether the mosques in Karacabey, the stork festival in Eskikaraağaç or the district’s landscapes should shape your stay. Then tailor your search to your travel interests, rather than using the town name alone as your guide.
