Bilecik offers several distinct ways to explore its history and culture: an archaeology and ethnography museum, historic buildings, and the exhibitions at the Yaşayan Şehir Museum. Atatürk Park offers a different focus, with quiet areas, a playground and events. You can plan your stay around the experiences you want to prioritise.

Museums offering different perspectives

The Bilecik Museum displays archaeological and ethnographic finds from Bilecik and the surrounding area. The building itself also has a story to tell: it was built as a two-storey gendarmerie building in 1794. It was destroyed during the Turkish War of Independence and rebuilt on its foundations after the war. It served as a courthouse and prison until 1995, and opened as a museum in 2007. The collection and the building’s history thus offer two different perspectives on Bilecik.

The ethnographic halls of the Bilecik Müzesi feature displays about the founding of the Ottoman Empire alongside insights into life in nomadic camps and households. Exhibits include weapons, everyday vessels made of ceramic and metal, as well as clothing and jewellery from the Bilecik region. If you are interested in everyday history, these objects offer a particularly tangible way to engage with the exhibition’s themes.

At the Yaşayan Şehir Museum, the Cumhuriyet Odası has its own focus. It opened during celebrations marking the 99th anniversary of the Bilecik Interview. On display are a gramophone, a piano and a wall clock, as well as photographs of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s visits to Bilecik. The wallpaper, curtains and furnishings reflect the fashions of the time. In both subject and design, the room differs from the ethnographic halls of the Bilecik Museum.

History and buildings in Bilecik

Şeyh Edebali died in Bilecik in 1326 and was buried in a room in his zawiya that was used as a mosque. After the Ottomans conquered Bilecik, he moved his zawiya there and continued his religious services. Şeyh Edebali is regarded as the spiritual founder of the Ottoman state. These milestones in his life give the site historical significance that extends beyond its individual buildings.

The Bilecik Clock Tower is another reminder of the city’s history: it was built in 1907 on the orders of Ertuğrul Mutasarrıf Musa Kazım Bey. Orhangazi Mosque offers a different architectural detail. It is also known as Kurşunlu Mosque because its dome was covered with lead during a restoration. The date, the person who commissioned it and the explanation of its name each offer a specific point of reference, helping you appreciate these buildings not just as a backdrop, but for their own stories.

Another side of your stay: Atatürk Park

Atatürk Park in the city centre offers quiet areas, places to eat and drink, a children’s playground, ornamental pools and animal figures depicting Bilecik’s native wildlife. Alongside museums and architectural history, it provides a public space with different ways to spend time. For families, the playground and children’s events may factor into planning the day, without having to shift the focus of your stay away from culture.

The park hosts street concerts, performances and events for children; concerts in the amphitheatre are also among its uses. If an event matters for your travel dates, check the exact dates in advance. That way, you can plan around what you actually want to experience, rather than assuming a particular event will be on.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your travel plans

Your planned focus can help you choose a holiday apartment: if you mainly want to explore the museums and historic buildings, include these places in your own planning for location and daily activities. If you also want to spend time outdoors, take the facilities at Atatürk Park into account. What matters is finding the right mix of exhibitions, architectural history and breaks for your trip.
