Derinkuyu: Underground City and Cultural Park
Accommodation in Derinkuyu
Derinkuyu brings together an underground city, a cultural park featuring sculpture, and a church also known as Üzümlü Kilise because of its grape reliefs. This offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: the geological conditions and history beneath the earth, plants and art in the park, and religious architectural history. When planning, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay; this can help you choose accommodation that matches your actual travel interests.
The Underground City of Derinkuyu
The geological formations of Cappadocia made the underground city of Derinkuyu possible. It comprises eight floors of rooms that could accommodate and provide for a large community. The city is estimated to have housed around 20,000 people. Its facilities include a missionary school and a baptismal font. These details show the variety of spaces underground: they include not only passageways, but also areas for communal and religious life.
The underground city opened to visitors in 1965. It is open daily from 08:00 to 18:45. Not all floors are accessible to visitors; the tour reaches the eighth floor, 55 metres below ground. Check the opening hours and current tour conditions before your trip. The MüzeKart is valid for Turkish citizens; you should also check ticket and card regulations before your visit.
Art and Greenery at Hakkı Atamulu Cultural Park
Hakkı Atamulu Cultural Park offers a different focus from the underground city. Pine trees and numerous other types of trees and plants grow there, and the park is home to 15 works and sculptures by Hakkı Atamulu. Its facilities include an amphitheatre, a roller-skating area, a swimming pool, a library and a children’s playground. Plants, sculpture and the variety of facilities make the park a versatile counterpart to the architecture underground. The playground is one part of what the park offers, not the only reason to consider visiting it.
Church Architecture and History
Aziz Theodoros Trion Kilisesi was built in 1856 for the local Greek community and opened for worship on 15 May 1858. Grape motifs on the reliefs of its exterior facade explain its other name, Üzümlü Kilise. The church also features rich architectural sculptural decoration and high-quality monumental murals. Its history, facade decoration and murals offer different points of interest for exploring the church.
A spring service held annually in May at Üzümlü Kilise is on record; Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos also attended. Another architectural point of interest is Derinkuyu Park Mosque: designed by sculptor Hakkı Atamulu, it is regarded as a significant example of modern architecture.
Getting Around the Region and Choosing Accommodation
Road connections are key for getting there: Derinkuyu can only be reached by road. Derinkuyu lies on the Niğde–Nevşehir road, with direct road connections to Kayseri, Nevşehir, Aksaray and Niğde. Routes and conditions can change, so plan your current route to suit your plans.
The underground monastery of Aya Maryeros is another point of interest in the wider region. It consists of tunnels, living areas, various rooms, a cellar and galleries carved into the rock. One historian gives its depth as 10 to 15 metres below the earth’s surface. The Byzantine monastery is said to be a place that may have been used as the world’s first psychiatric hospital. The story of Baş Melekler Kilisesi tells of a different kind of change: it was closed for worship in 1924. In 1949, Tahsin Ertaş from Derinkuyu bought the building, donated it to the Presidency of Religious Affairs and had it converted into a mosque. Today it is used as Derinkuyu Cumhuriyet Camii.
When choosing a holiday apartment, tailor your search to the focus of your trip. If your stay centres on the underground city, the cultural park and church architecture, you can include holiday apartments in Derinkuyu in your search. If you are also planning to visit places in the wider region, compare the accommodation’s location with your own route and preferred daily schedule. This way, your choice is based on the places and themes you actually want to experience rather than a general assumption about the best location.
