Ko Libong: Coast, Nature and Island Culture
Accommodation in Ko Libong
Ko Libong is the largest island in Trang Province. Coastal headlands and beaches, marine habitats, viewpoints and community life in Batu Puteh give a stay a range of different highlights. When choosing your holiday rental, first consider which experiences interest you most: nature and the sea, a climb with panoramic views, or local cuisine and traditions.
Coasts and habitats
In the north lies Laem To Chai, a coastal headland and recreational beach with coarse golden sand, natural shell fragments and scattered rocks. In the south, Laem Pan Yang forms another coastal headland. On the east side, Laem Chu Hoi is known as a viewpoint for sunrise. These three places describe different coastal points on the island, without needing to be linked into a single route.
Ko Libong’s landscape includes mangrove forests, coral reefs and seagrass beds. They provide important nurseries for coastal marine animals and food for resident and migratory seabirds. Seagrass is also important to dugongs: it serves as their food. A survey conducted from 19 to 26 February 2023 found dugong feeding trails in the seagrass beds, particularly in the northern part of Ko Libong. This offers a specific glimpse of the relationship between the animals and their habitat, but does not guarantee that you will see dugongs on a trip.
Distinctive natural features add to the coastal scenery. Hat Thung Ya Kha has rock formations lined up along the beach, as well as a stone bridge. Ao Tuke, also called To Ke Waterfall, is a small waterfall on Ko Libong that flows into the sea. The island also has a freshwater pool in the sea, whose salinity changes with the tides. A bridge about 1 kilometre long leads from the island area out into the sea.
Climbs and viewpoints
Those who want to make a climb the focus of their visit will find two named destinations on Ko Libong: Batu Puteh Mountain is a destination for mountain climbs. Khao Tu Tete is also in Batu Puteh; it is a viewpoint reached by climbing. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. The climb is therefore part of the experience described; plan for it as a separate activity.
Another viewpoint is Laem Chu Hoi, a spot for watching the sunrise. Ko Libong thus offers different viewpoint experiences: a viewpoint reached after a climb and a coastal point used for sunrise viewing. The five-storey-high marine life observation tower is another distinctive landmark on the island.
Batu Puteh, culture and cuisine
Islamic culture is a central part of community life in Batu Puteh. Pla Nuea Som is also made there using a traditional method: the fish is salted and fermented. For travellers who want to discover local culture and food traditions as well as nature, these experiences are among Ko Libong’s distinctive features.
Fresh seafood is offered to tourists on Ko Libong. Dishes include fried sun-dried mackerel, yellow or sour curry with snapper, squid in black sauce, steamed blue crab and seaweed salad. Processed seafood is also offered as souvenirs, including dried fish, shrimp paste, dried shrimp, crab chilli paste and pickled sea cucumber. The selection ranges from prepared dishes to products intended as gifts to take home.
Getting there and staying
Ban Prao Pier serves passenger traffic to Hat Yao Pier, Chao Mai Pier and other islands. This is a useful point of reference for planning your trip if you want to combine Ko Libong with other islands; it does not include information about travel times or departures.
The community tourism business group on Ko Libong organises two-day tourism programmes that include one night on the island. This describes a stay with an overnight stay as part of the programme. If you are looking for a holiday rental instead, the island’s highlights can guide your choice: coastal landscapes and seagrass, a climb in Batu Puteh, or culture and cuisine each offer a different reason to discover Ko Libong.
