Karon: Beach Sounds, Coastal Views and Wat Karon
Accommodation in Karon
Karon Beach defines Karon with sand that makes sounds as you walk on it and its role as a viewpoint for sunsets. There are also two named beach sections and a nearby viewpoint from which you can see three beaches. Wat Karon and the Karon Temple Trail offer a different perspective from the coastal views. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Karon, these differences can help you decide in advance whether you want your trip to be shaped by the beach, the panoramas, or the temple and trail.
Beach and Panoramas
Karon Beach is divided into two named areas: Karon Noi Beach lies to the north, and the straight stretch of Karon Yai Beach lies to the south. This north–south division gives the beach two specific names that you can use to distinguish the areas when finding your way around. The sand is another distinctive feature: Karon Beach is known for sand that makes sounds as you walk on it. The beach is also considered a viewpoint for sunsets, so its coastal character and evening views are among its defining impressions.
For a view beyond the beach scenery, Karon View Point is nearby. From there, you can see Kata Yai Beach, Kata Noi Beach and Karon Beach. The viewpoint was formerly called Kata View Point; both names refer to the same place.
Wat Karon and the Temple Trail
The Karon Temple Trail starts in the centre of Karon Beach and passes Wat Karon. Its route makes the temple a point of reference for anyone who wants to include a walking route as well as the beach in their plans. Wat Karon, also called Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, is on Patak Road, about 500 metres from Karon Beach. Wat Karon is outside Karon Beach and is not part of the beach.
Nearby Wat Karon comprises an ordination hall, a preaching hall, a Dhamma hall and residential buildings for monks. The complex features Thai Buddhist architecture with intricate details; Wat Karon also houses several Buddha statues, including a rare statue in black sapphire. With its architecture and Buddha statues, the nearby temple offers a different perspective from the beach areas. The history of nearby Wat Karon also stretches further back: in the late 1930s, the temple received the royal grant of Wisung Kham Sima.
A small community market is located right next to nearby Wat Karon. Visitors can buy snacks and browse souvenirs there.
Planning Your Holiday in Karon
Surfing competitions have also been held at Karon Beach: on 16 and 17 August 2025, it hosted Karon Fin Fest2 X Surftival, with competitions for Thai and international surfers.
If you’re planning a family trip, you can decide together whether a focus on the coast is enough or whether you’d also like to include views and culture. This is a useful starting point for choosing where you’d like to stay in Karon.
