A glass bridge with far-reaching views, caves with prehistoric traces and a museum devoted to fossils: Nong Bua Lam Phu combines nature experiences with culture and history. At the Chong Khao Khat Skywalk in Phu Kao–Phu Phan Kham National Park, you can look out from the 16-metre-wide and 21-metre-long bridge. From there, the view extends all around Ubolratana Reservoir; at sunset, the ridge of Phu Kao is also clearly visible.

Rocky Landscapes, Views and Caves

Phu Kao–Phu Phan Kham National Park is in Non Sang District. The Phu Kao section includes forest, habitats for numerous wildlife species, caves, waterfalls, rocky areas and unusual rock formations. If you are interested in landscapes and rock formations, you will find a different focus here from the province’s museums and archaeological sites.

Erawan Cave in Na Wang District is reached by climbing more than 600 steps from the foot of the mountain to the cave entrance. A large Buddha statue stands at the entrance; inside is a spacious chamber that can accommodate several hundred people. A passage leads to a rock wall with views over the fields. The steps are a practical factor in planning your day and distinguish this cave visit from an outing focused on views and scenery without this documented climb.

Overnight stays are also part of the nature experience in the Phu Phan Kham section of the national park: tourists often stay in tents, park accommodation or camping huts run by the responsible government agency at Ubolratana Reservoir. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Nong Bua Lam Phu, use the kind of trip you want as a guide: park landscapes and views, or an itinerary featuring museums, handicrafts and historic sites.

Museums and Historic Traces

Wat Tham Klong Phen is a well-known forest temple at the foot of the Phu Phan mountain range in Mueang Nong Bua Lamphu District. Its museum preserves the ashes and personal religious belongings of Luang Pu Khao Anālayo. Another museum is dedicated to him and features a seated wax figure for veneration. The building is designed to resemble three rocks stacked on top of one another.

The Museum of 150-Million-Year-Old Shell Fossils and Dinosaur Fossils in Ban Huai Duea displays late Jurassic shell fossils found there. It also documents dinosaur bones and footprints discovered in Non Than Subdistrict, including finds from Ban Huai Duea. The exhibits take visitors from the universe and solar system through the Earth and the origins of life, then explore the development of plants, animals and humans, as well as dinosaurs and fossils. The museum is on the grounds of the Non Than Subdistrict Administration in Mueang District, about 25 kilometres north of the provincial capital.

Other historic sites tell stories from different eras. The Non Phrao archaeological site preserves evidence from prehistoric times and the Dvaravati and Lan Xang periods; it is estimated to be about 2,500 years old. Non Wat Pa is an ancient archaeological site where a stone Buddha protected by a Naga and remains attributed to Khmer art from its flourishing period have been found. Wat Tham Suwannakhuha is registered as an archaeological monument and contains antiquities as well as a statue of King Chai Chetthathirath of Vientiane.

Local Handicrafts and Regional Orientation

At the Ban Khong Sawan Ceramics Handicraft Centre in Mueang District, pottery is made using traditional methods. The village is about 17 kilometres from Nong Bua Lamphu town, along Highway 210 towards Udon Thani. At Huai Duea Market, residents sell seasonal vegetables and agricultural produce as well as forest products, mushrooms, fruit, bamboo shoots, vegetables grown with reduced pesticide use and red ant eggs. The range of goods at this community market offers a different perspective on the region from a visit to a museum.

The Wat Suwannaram Moral Community in Suwannakhuha District also offers insights into local knowledge: visitors can take part in ceremonies and learning experiences and work with residents to develop products based on traditional knowledge. The landscape is therefore not the only factor in choosing what to focus on during your trip; handicrafts, regional produce and community experiences may also shape your interests.

From Bangkok, Nong Bua Lamphu can be reached via Highways 1 and 2, then via Chaiyaphum, Chum Phae and Si Bun Rueang. For regional orientation, the subdistricts include Mueang Nong Bua Lam Phu District and Na Klang District. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether you want to focus mainly on the caves and national park, fossils and history, or handicrafts and community experiences.
