Nakhon Si Thammarat lies 780 kilometres south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. The province combines coastal landscapes with a mountainous, forested interior. Its highlights include Khao Luang, waterfalls, Buddhist traditions and local fruits. When planning your trip, it is worth asking yourself what you would most like to focus on: nature, the coast, culture, or a combination of these. Your interests can also guide your search for a holiday apartment or house.

Mountains, Waterfalls and Wildlife

Khao Luang reaches 1,835 metres above sea level and is the source of more than 15 streams and rivers. The interior is also characterised by lush jungles, waterfalls and a diverse range of exotic wildlife. Krung Ching Waterfall is in Khao Luang National Park, in the subdistrict of Krung Ching. If you are especially interested in mountain and forest landscapes, this offers a different focus from the coast. The elevation and waterways also give a sense of the diversity of the province’s natural environments.

Khao Plai Dam also combines nature with a view: this coastal mountain, known for its conservation and recreational value, lies on the boundary between Khanom and Sichon districts. From its viewpoint, you can look out across Ao Thong Yang Bay. The region therefore offers contrasting landscapes: the mountains around Khao Luang, a waterfall in the national park, and a viewpoint overlooking a bay.

Coast and Marine Habitats

Nakhon Si Thammarat has numerous undeveloped beaches. Laem Talumphuk in Pak Phanang District is a crescent-shaped white-sand beach. When planning your holiday, you can therefore decide whether to focus more on the coast or the mountainous interior, rather than associating the province with just one type of landscape.

An area prepared for designation as Hat Khanom-Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park includes coral reefs and seagrass beds. These habitats provide a home for humpback dolphins, also known as pink dolphins, as well as green sea turtles. This adds the area’s natural environment to the picture of its coast: the region is characterised not only by beaches but also by marine habitats. If you are choosing your trip primarily for its natural attractions, you can consider this coastal landscape alongside the forest and mountain areas as a distinct focus.

Temple Traditions and Shadow Puppetry

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan has served as an important regional Buddhist centre since its founding in the 8th century. The temple preserves religious and local traditions, including an annual ceremony in which the Great Reliquary is wrapped, and the Nora dance drama. These traditions offer a cultural perspective on Nakhon Si Thammarat that differs from its natural attractions and coastal landscapes.

Another cultural destination is the Suchart Subsin Shadow-Puppet Museum in Mueang District. As a living museum and educational centre, it is dedicated to preserving shadow puppetry as part of the local cultural heritage. It is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. If you are interested in tradition and performing arts, you can make this museum a focus of your trip alongside temple history and nature.

Fruit and Choosing Where to Stay

During fruit season in Ban Khiriwong, you can pick, buy and sample local fruits such as champedak, mangosteens, rambutans and langsat. This seasonal experience differs from the province’s other nature and culture attractions and offers another reason to discover local highlights.

Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport is in Pak Phun, in Mueang District. You can therefore choose a holiday apartment or house to suit the focus of your trip without treating the region’s different landscapes and experiences as a single destination.
