Khon Kaen can be explored through several very different themes: nature and geological history take centre stage in Phu Wiang National Park, while Khon Kaen National Museum focuses on antiques and works of art from northeastern Thailand. In Chonnabot, a silk-weaving group combines mulberry and silkworm farming with a learning centre. This variety gives you starting points for considering which experiences you want to shape your trip.

Geopark and Nature Experiences in Phu Wiang

The Khon Kaen Geopark covers about 1,038 square kilometres and extends across the Phu Wiang and Wiang Kao districts in Khon Kaen Province. Its scale and geographic scope give the geopark a distinctive place in the region. Those interested in landscapes and geological history will find several specific points of interest here, from a nature trail to an extraordinary fossil layer.

The nature trail in Phu Wiang National Park is about 3 kilometres long. Along the way, visitors can see dinosaur excavation sites, ancient fossils and viewpoints overlooking the forest. These stops bring together different aspects of the park: prehistoric finds and excavation sites sit alongside views of the forest. The approximate length helps you take this walk into account as a distinct part of your day’s plans.

Another feature of the national park is the uranium ore mining site. Visitors can explore traces of uranium exploration drilling on foot and take photographs there. Pha Kal Time, also called Pha Tawan Lap Fa Viewpoint, is located on the ridge of Phu Wiang National Park and offers views of the sunset. Together, these places offer different perspectives on the park: traces of exploration, a landscape to experience on foot, and a viewpoint named for sunsets.

The Phu Wiang shell cemetery also points to the area’s geological history. It consists of a dense fossil shell layer from the Early Cretaceous, about 130 million years ago. The layer contains up to nine species of bivalve molluscs. For travellers interested in fossils, this specific composition is a point of interest in its own right, alongside the dinosaur excavation sites and ancient fossils along the nature trail.

Museum, Silk Weaving and Local Products

Khon Kaen National Museum was established to collect, preserve and display antiques and works of art from northeastern Thailand. Its scope therefore extends beyond individual objects to encompass a wider region. Those wishing to include cultural themes in their trip can consider the museum as a different focus from the nature and fossil-related attractions of the Phu Wiang area.

In Ban Hua Fai, Village 2, Po Daeng Subdistrict, Chonnabot District, the Ban Hua Fai Mudmee Silk Weaving Group runs a village with fully integrated mulberry and silkworm farming. It also has a silk-weaving learning centre serving Chonnabot District and Khon Kaen Province. The focus here therefore includes both farming and weaving. This cultural point of interest differs from a museum collection and from the geological features in the national park.

Local specialities also include processed fish products from the area around the Ubol Ratana Dam. They are known as local products of the dam.

Which area suits your travel interests?

When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider which of these themes matter most to your trip. Phu Wiang National Park offers points of interest related to nature and geological history; the museum and silk weaving offer different cultural experiences. Base your further choice of location on the specific places you want to explore in Khon Kaen. This way, your search for suitable accommodation starts with the kind of trip you want, rather than with a broad assumption about the region.
