In Chumphon, island experiences meet nature trails, viewpoints and places with a history of their own. Mu Ko Chumphon National Park extends across five districts of the province—Pathio, Mueang Chumphon, Sawi, Thung Tako and Lang Suan—and encompasses an archipelago of more than 40 islands. This offers a varied range of options for planning your trip: you can focus on the sea, the inland landscape or cultural attractions.

Islands and Beaches on the Gulf

Mu Ko Chumphon National Park offers opportunities for snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming in the sea and kayaking. On Ko Phithak, you can explore the island by bicycle, take boat trips and observe shallow-water corals. Ko Mattra offers a different experience: snorkelling trips, homestay accommodation and night-time squid-fishing activities are available there. The island is also known for its unusual chicken crabs, which climb trees. If you want to experience the sea and nature in different ways, you’ll find some specific ideas here to help you choose your excursions.

The beaches also offer different reasons to visit. Hat Thung Wua Laen is in Pathio District and has clear water; it’s a good place for a walk or some relaxation. Hat Lokam is about 500 metres long; its water is also clear, and the beach is suitable for relaxing and swimming. When planning your day, you can choose between a walk along the beach and spending time in the water, without treating both places as the same kind of excursion.

Nature Trails and Panoramic Views

Khao Chao Mueang has a nature trail where visitors can see rare plants. A 200-metre footpath leads from the service car park to the summit. Buddha relics are also housed in Phra Phuttha That Chedi Si Chumphon on Khao Chao Mueang. An interest in nature and a cultural site give this destination several distinct facets.

Another destination for nature lovers is the Khao Dinso viewpoint, reached by a 900-metre nature trail. From the viewpoint, the 360-degree panorama extends west to the border between Myanmar and Thailand, and east across the coast of Chumphon. Khao Thalu offers a different perspective: its viewpoint is 500 metres above sea level and affords a view of a sea of mist. The trail length and elevation can help you factor these destinations into your travel plans; they don’t indicate how long the walks take or what the trail conditions are like.

History, Local Insights and Events

At the Chumphon National Museum, you can learn about the region through photographs, films, light-and-sound presentations, detailed information panels, models and scale reconstructions. One light-and-sound presentation covers Typhoon Gay. Wat Phra That Sawi is registered as a national historic monument and is considered an important historical site in Chumphon Province.

In Pak Nam Lang Suan, visitors can learn about the way of life of a fishing community. There are also numerous restaurants serving fresh seafood along the beach road. In Phato District, you’ll find a different connection with nature: the headwaters of Khlong Phato are home to dusky langurs and hornbills. The Phato Rafting Festival takes place in January and February. If you’re particularly interested in culture, local ways of life, wildlife observation or an event, these interests can help shape your excursion plans.

Choosing the Right Focus for Your Trip

Chumphon can’t be reduced to a single kind of holiday: islands and the sea, beaches, nature trails, viewpoints and historic sites cater to different interests. When choosing a holiday rental, first consider which of these experiences matter to you during your stay and which excursions you’d like to plan.
