Laem Sing: Dolphins, Mat Weaving and History
Accommodation in Laem Sing
Laem Sing combines a long river crossing with traditional crafts, dolphin shows, caves and historic sites. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to consider whether you want to focus mainly on crafts, boating experiences or history. The specific differences between these experiences offer a tangible starting point for planning your trip.
River Bridge, Dolphins and Mat Weaving
Taksin Maharaj Bridge, also called Laem Sing Bridge, is in Amphoe Laem Sing and spans the Chanthaburi River for about 1,060 metres. It also serves as a landmark along a scenic route. Its length makes the river crossing especially impressive as an engineering structure.
In Paknam Laem Sing, Amphoe Laem Sing, Oasis Sea World hosts shows featuring rare pink dolphins. Those interested in dolphin performances will find a specific excursion destination here. As details of the animal programme can change, check the latest programme information before your visit.
In Bang Sra Kao, visitors can watch Chanthaboon mats being made from February to May. The process includes drying, dyeing and cutting reeds. This seasonal window matters if you want to see these particular craft-making steps.
Boats, Viewpoint and Cave
In Bang Sra Kao, covered excursion boats are available for around 6 to 10 people, as well as small fishing boats and fibreglass boats. The approximate capacity of the excursion boats can help when planning a group trip. Confirm current availability before booking.
On Ko Proet, the main viewpoint is by the Pirate Cave, also called the Swallow Cave. It can be reached by climbing on foot; check the current condition of the path locally. The viewpoint and climb are therefore a different focus from a boat trip or a visit to historic buildings.
At Ko Proet's Bat Cave, the entrance is closed at high tide and open at low tide, allowing small boats to enter the cave. If you are planning this excursion, confirm the tide and access conditions locally.
Historic Sites and Their Stories
The Red Building in Paknam Laem Sing was built by the French in 1893. It served as a guard post and accommodation for the soldiers who guarded Paknam Laem Sing, and is located at Laem Sing Pier near Khuk Khi Kai. Khuk Khi Kai Tower was also built in 1893, during the Thai-French conflict, to imprison Thais who resisted the great power.
Khuk Khi Kai is square: each side measures 4.40 metres, the tower is 7 metres high and it has two rows of ventilation openings. The site's unusual historical use is also part of its story: the upper floor was used to keep chickens, whose droppings fell onto the prisoners held below.
Piree Fortress is another historic monument on Khao Laem Sing, in Tambon Bang Kachai, Amphoe Laem Sing. It is near the Independence Chedi. Together with the Red Building and Khuk Khi Kai, it offers another historic point of interest for choosing excursions focused on buildings and their past.
Season and tides affect planning: visitors can watch mat-making from February to May, while access to the Bat Cave depends on the tides. If either experience is a deciding factor in your choice of holiday rental, plan around the relevant condition.
