Forests and mountains, a plateau, waterfalls and ancient cultural sites give Chaiyaphum a diverse character. The province lies on the edge of the Khorat Plateau in Isan, between Thailand’s central and northern regions. Nature experiences and cultural discoveries go hand in hand here—a good starting point for shaping your trip around the places and themes that interest you most.

Landscape Between Forest and Plateau

Around half of Chaiyaphum consists of forests and mountains, with the other half made up of a plateau. This contrast shapes the range of nature experiences on offer: you can go on jungle hikes in the nature parks, while striking rock formations and waterfalls make their own destinations for day trips. If you want to put the landscape at the heart of your trip planning, you can use the national parks as a guide and choose specific natural attractions to visit.

Namtok Sai Thong, a 100-metre-high waterfall, is located in Sai Thong National Park. Pa Hin Ngam National Park is known for rock formations shaped by time and erosion. The natural rock arch Pratu Khlong is in Phu Laen Kha National Park. Mo Hin Khao is also located there: its five large sandstone pillars have earned it the name Thailand’s Stonehenge. Their distinctive forms make these places destinations in their own right for travellers who want to discover the province’s geological features as well as go hiking.

Waterfalls and Trails in the Nature Parks

Tat Ton National Park lies on the edge of the Phu Laen Kha mountain range and is home to the Tat Ton, Tat Klang and Pha Iang waterfalls. At Tat Ton Waterfall, you can picnic and swim amid the forest landscape. The spot is especially appealing during the rainy season, when water levels are high, for travellers who want to include water and nature in their day-trip plans. The park’s three waterfalls and Tat Ton Waterfall as a place to picnic and swim are distinct aspects of a visit to nature.

Cultural Discoveries

Chaiyaphum’s cultural character reflects Thai, Lao and Khmer heritage. Ban Khwao offers a glimpse of textile traditions and specialises in weaving Mut Mee silk with distinctive patterns. The Komgrish Ancient Textile Museum displays Khit designs and antique silk textiles from the community of descendants of Chaopho Phraya Lae. If you are interested in fabrics and patterns, you can make these discoveries a focus of your trip alongside the natural attractions.

Historical landmarks also form part of the province’s cultural landscape. Wat Phrathat Nong Sam Muen is home to a 16th-century stupa dating from the reign of Lan Xang King Setthathirath. The grounds of the main temple in Ban Khon Sawan preserve a collection of around two dozen Bai Sema dating from the 9th century. In Ban Kut Ngong, 29 stone Buddhist boundary markers are housed in a sheltered structure on the grounds of a wat. Each of these collections and structures gives its site a distinct historical connection.

Festivals with Unique Forms and Traditions

Hae Krathup, the Festival of Glowing Incense, is an annual three-day festival in Chaiyaphum. It is held before the end of the Buddhist Lent, Wan Ok Phansa. The festival features Krathup structures measuring 3 to 6 metres in height; traditionally, they have a central bamboo spire and colourful garlands. The Hae Nak Hot Festival takes place every year in May in the Ban Non Salao-Non Than area, Tambon Nong Thum, Amphoe Phu Khieo. The tradition has existed for more than 100 years. Its procession follows a village route of more than 3 kilometres. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, these details about timing and location are a useful starting point.
