In Satuek District, river culture meets traces of ancient settlement. Ban Tha Ruea, a community in Tha Ruea Subdistrict, is an important cultural tourism destination and participates in the OTOP Nawatwithi programme. Community tourism there includes fishing, boat trips for the views and learning about the traditional way of life of residents along the river. This offers two perspectives from which to discover the district: life along the Mun and the history of the landscape.

Community Tourism in Ban Tha Ruea

Activities in Ban Tha Ruea are closely connected to the river. Fishing and boat trips for the views go hand in hand with learning about the traditional way of life of residents along the river. Those interested in local traditions will find a concrete way to experience community tourism here; those who appreciate views of the Mun can consider the boat trips mentioned as an experience in their own right. Both themes are part of the community’s tourism offering, without implying a particular itinerary or fixed visiting time.

Ban Tha Ruea can therefore be a point of reference when planning a trip with a cultural focus. The OTOP Nawatwithi programme and the activities there give the place its own distinctive tourist character. When looking for holiday accommodation in Satuek District, you can consider whether you want to focus your trip mainly on encounters with the local way of life, river experiences or historical themes. Choosing the right place to stay remains a separate decision.

Ancient Settlements and Pottery Kilns

Archaeological themes also shape the surrounding area. Ban Khok Mueang in Satuek District is one of the ancient settlements in the plains near the Mun River identified through aerial photography and archaeological surveys. This classification draws attention to the long history of settlement in the river plains. It complements present-day insights into life along the Mun with a historical perspective on the region.

Another notable site is the Satuek Kiln Site in Ban Dong Yai Pha, about 6 kilometres west of Satuek District, on Huai Takong (Lam Ta Khong). The site contains at least 10 kilns. It is interpreted as an area where pottery in the Buriram style was produced. The number and arrangement of the kilns make the site a distinct archaeological subject; the interpretation of the pottery also places it within a regional style. Those interested in ancient settlements and crafts can consider these themes alongside river experiences when choosing places to visit.

The Mun River and Places to Unwind

Tha Ruea Tha Rak is a popular destination on the banks of the Mun River. Locals and tourists gather there to relax. The river is therefore not only the setting for activities in Ban Tha Ruea, but also a focal point for spending time by the water.

The Big Buddha also stands on the riverbank: พระพุทธรูปปฏิมาสันตยาภิรมย์สตึกอุดมราษฎร์นิมิตมุนินทร์. It is located in the 72nd Anniversary Park, opposite the Satuek District Administration Office. A religious monument and the riverside area are thus among the place’s specific landmarks.

A Dated Event on the Mun

The Satuek longboat race took place on 4 and 5 November 2023 on the Mun River. The venue was the 72nd Anniversary Park in front of the Satuek District Administration Office. The date refers to that edition of the race and is a historical reference for the event, not an indication of a future date. Together with the Big Buddha and the riverbank, this venue shows the different connections to the Mun that come together in Satuek: recreation, a prominent monument and a specific event from 2023.
