Wat Si Maha Pho makes a striking architectural statement with a flying stucco Garuda; Bueng Samphao Loi puts the restoration of a pond and its intended functions in the foreground. Both places are in Rong Chang Subdistrict and offer different thematic perspectives for a trip to Rong Chang.

Wat Si Maha Pho: the flying Garuda

At Wat Si Maha Pho, a stucco Garuda in a flying pose is located on the gable of the dining hall. Seated or standing depictions are common; this motif stands out for its flying pose. For those interested in architecture, the pose is a specific detail that can be compared with more common variations.

A gable is the upper end of a roof at its front-facing side; this placement anchors the motif to the dining hall. Stucco refers to sculpted plaster decoration. This makes it possible to distinguish three features of the depiction: its pose, material, and architectural context. Those interested in temple architecture can take a closer look at one particular form in this motif: both the movement depicted and the place on the building where the figure is mounted.

History of the settlement area

The area around Wat Si Maha Pho is considered to have been a settlement from the late Ayutthaya period through the Rattanakosin period. This timeframe broadens the focus from the individual artwork to the history of the settlement area. Two different scales thus sit side by side: the specific design of the dining hall and a longer period of local history. Alongside temple architecture, those interested in the region’s past also have a second way to explore the cultural history of Rong Chang Subdistrict.

Bueng Samphao Loi: restoration and planned use

During restoration work at Bueng Samphao Loi, trees were planted and aquatic animals released; weeds were also removed, the area around the pond was maintained, and litter was collected. The body of water was intended to serve agriculture and help prevent and manage natural disasters. It was also planned as a place for sports, recreation, and leisure. The planned functions combine practical use and preparedness with leisure activities; the pond was therefore not intended solely as a place for recreation.

The park opened in July 2023. Check current conditions before visiting. This will help ensure your plans reflect the actual conditions on site.

A focus for planning your trip

When looking for a holiday rental in Rong Chang, it helps to decide on a theme first: would you like to focus your trip more on architecture and local history, or are you interested in the planned functions of Bueng Samphao Loi? Wat Si Maha Pho and the pond offer different focuses.
