Kalutara brings together a wide range of discoveries: a hollow stupa with an accessible interior, archaeological traces from the Late Pleistocene, rainforest reserves and waterfalls. There is also a long beach in Panadura and a glimpse of traditional village life in Kiniyawala. So, when planning your holiday, it’s worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your trip.

Kalutara Bodhiya and routes into history

Kalutara Bodhiya is a hollow stupa whose interior is accessible. The site can also be reached by bus: possible routes include Colombo–Kalutara or Colombo–Galle, with a stop in Kalutara. Kalutara Bodhiya is considered one of 32 saplings of the Sri Maha Bodhi planted during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa in the 2nd century BC. A visit therefore focuses both on the stupa’s distinctive design and its historical context.

Pahiyangala, also known as Fa Hien Cave, offers a different glimpse into the past. The cave is an archaeologically significant site in Kalutara District, where fossilised human skeletal remains from the Late Pleistocene were discovered. Research into microlithic technology has also been conducted at Pahiyangala. Anyone interested in early human history will find a tangible connection here to archaeological finds and technological discoveries.

Richmond Castle is another historic destination in Kalutara. It was built around the turn of the 20th century and stands on a 42-acre estate beside Kalutara-Palatota Road. Its construction date, estate size and location make it a distinct landmark in Kalutara’s history. Kande Viharaya is home to the Samadhi Buddha statue, which stands 48.8 m (160 ft) tall. Its unusual scale adds another point of interest for travellers drawn to religious architecture and art.

Rainforest, wildlife and rivers

The Yagirala Rainforest Reserve offers nature enthusiasts several concrete points of interest. It covers more than 2,360 hectares. It is home to 36 mammal species, including four endemic species, and the reserve contains plants from 62 families. These figures describe different aspects of the area: the extent of the rainforest reserve, its mammals and the diversity of its plant families. Families who are especially interested in discovering animals or plants can take these interests into account when choosing excursions.

The Ruhunukanda Forest Reserve adds a different landscape detail: it is home to 52 bird species. The Maguru River flows through the forest in the Ruhunu Hills, within the Ruhunukanda Forest Reserve. Birds, forest and river are specific themes for travellers who want to include natural sights in their stay alongside cultural destinations.

Waterfalls, beach and village life

Several waterfalls offer different reasons to explore. Makeli Ella Falls in Kalutara District is 10 m high. The route to Thudugala Ella Waterfall starts at Katukurunda Junction on Galle Road. Thotas Ella is a scenic waterfall in Kalutara District, where visitors take part in water-based activities. You can choose among these destinations according to your interests: the height of a waterfall, a well-known route starting point or an experience on the water.

Panadura is known for its long beach and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, Bolgoda Lake and the Bolgoda River. Travellers looking for a coastal setting will find a different focus here than at the forest reserves or historic sites. In Kiniyawala, visitors can experience traditional village life, including staying in the village and taking part in making Kithul products and foods.

When looking for a holiday rental, the kind of trip you want may therefore be a deciding factor: do you want to focus on nature, waterfalls, the beach, history or village culture? First, consider which of these interests matter to your family, and take them into account when choosing where to stay. Kalutara’s varied attractions offer specific starting points, without requiring one type of excursion to define the entire trip.
