Discover Katunayake: Airport and Surroundings
Accommodation in Katunayake
Katunayake is home to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Sri Lanka’s main international airport. This gives the town a clear geographical reference point for travel planning. At the same time, nearby Negombo and the wider surrounding region offer coastal, nature and cultural attractions. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider the airport location and your interests in local excursions as separate factors.
Airport Location and Choosing Where to Stay
Bandaranaike International Airport is located in Katunayake and is Sri Lanka’s main international airport. If you would rather focus on the coast, mangroves or history, nearby Negombo and other destinations in the region offer attractions in their own right. Before searching, you can weigh up whether the airport location itself or your interest in nearby destinations is the deciding factor.
Coast and History in Nearby Negombo
Negombo is a seaside resort on Sri Lanka’s west coast. Its main attractions include wide sandy beaches and a sea considered safe. Old churches and fishing villages are also among its sights. The old Dutch fort gate was built in 1672 and is now part of the prison. The Dutch Canal served as a supply route for the Dutch administration. The beach, local history and colonial traces each give Negombo its own character.
The NARA Mangrove Trail is also nearby. It covers 14 hectares and is managed and operated by the National Aquatic Research Authority (NARA). As a nature attraction, the mangrove trail complements Negombo’s beaches and historic sights. Travel planning can therefore take different priorities into account: a coastal town and its history on the one hand, and mangrove landscapes on the other.
Nature in the Wider Surrounding Region
In Gampaha District, Muthurajawela Wetland Reserve and NARA Mangrove Sanctuary are among Sri Lanka’s most important coastal wetland reserves. Muthurajawela Wetland stretches parallel to the country’s west coast. Another nature attraction is Horagolla Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka’s smallest forest reserve. The distinction between coastal wetland and forest reserve highlights the variety of natural landscapes in the wider area without conflating them with the airport location.
Botanical History in the Western Province
The Western Province also offers botanical and cultural-history attractions. Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens were established in 1876 to introduce rubber to Sri Lanka. Their plant collections include about 2,000 species from Sri Lanka and other countries. The old Henarathgoda Railway Station has been preserved as a site of historical archaeological significance. Together, the garden, plant collections and railway station connect botanical history with another aspect of the region’s cultural heritage.
Katunayake offers a direct link to the country’s main international airport. Negombo adds beaches, history and mangroves to this location, while the wetlands, forest reserve and botanical attractions offer further nature and cultural interests in the surrounding area and Western Province. These differences can help you decide what you want to focus on during your trip when choosing a holiday rental.
