Kurunegala combines a landscape shaped by striking rocks with traces of different kingdoms and Buddhist culture. Discoveries range from ruins and temple complexes to an ornamental staircase and carved details. You can choose the focus of your trip based on whether you would most like to explore the landscape, history or religious architecture.

Rocks and Cityscape

Eight large rocks surround Kurunegala and shape its cityscape. Ethagala, also called Elephant Rock, is the largest of Kurunegala’s striking rocks and reaches a height of 325 metres. A Buddha statue was built on Athugala and is considered one of Kurunegala’s most significant landmarks. The rocks and the statue give the landscape a distinctive visual character; together, they offer a different way to experience the region than its historic buildings and ruins.

The climb to the summit of Dambadeniya offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. If you are looking for scenery as well as historic sites on your trip, you can plan this climb as a separate focus. In Yapahuwa, by contrast, the view centres particularly on a striking staircase: the rock fortress is known for its steep, ornamental staircase with carvings, including depictions of lions. Its character is therefore quite different from a visit focused primarily on ruins or inscriptions.

Royal History and Archaeological Sites

Dambadeniya was Sri Lanka’s capital from 1220 to 1272 AD. The archaeological site comprises the remains of a royal palace complex, audience halls, guardhouses and defensive walls. These different features make the site a historic stop where you can explore not just a single building, but the remains of a more extensive palace complex.

Kurunegala itself was also an ancient royal capital for 50 years, from the end of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century. The ruins of Panduwasnuwara are considered evidence of ancient Hasthishailapura. Those interested in the history of former capitals can include these places in their travel plans as distinct historical topics, rather than treating them as one and the same site.

Temples, Caves and Craftsmanship

In addition to the rock fortress, Yapahuwa has a stupa, a Bodhi tree enclosure and caves used by Buddhist monks. One of the caves features a Brahmi inscription. Another religious stop is Yapahuwa Rajamaha Vihara, a Buddhist temple built during the Kandyan period. Yapahuwa therefore brings together different aspects of Buddhist architectural and inscriptional history alongside its famous staircase.

Resvehera, also known as Sasseruva, is a temple of religious significance in Kurunegala District. Resvehera has caves with drip ledges and cave inscriptions. Ridi Viharaya is known for an intricately carved ivory doorframe and painted tiles. At Sri Wijayasundararamaya, Tampita Viharaya is considered the ancient relic house of the Kingdom of Dambadeniya. These details distinguish the places from one another: one focuses on caves and inscriptions, while another is known for a doorframe, tiles or a relic house.

Another way to explore regional architecture is to visit Panavitiya Ambalama. It was built as a rest stop for pilgrims, traders and travellers, and is known for its wood carvings. A minor road about 4 kilometres long, branching off the main road, leads to it. The site can also be understood in terms of the described route to reach it, while its former function and carvings provide its cultural focus.

Connections and Choosing Where to Stay

Kurunegala is a transit town with road and rail connections towards Anuradhapura, Kandy, Puttalam, Trincomalee and Negombo. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider these connections alongside the places and topics that matter most to your trip. You can select destinations according to your interests: rocks and panoramic views, royal history, temples or intricate details each offer a different way to shape your trip.
