Eastern Province: Temples, Lagoons and Birdlife
Accommodation in Eastern Province
Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province offers a wide range of options for a trip: ancient Buddhist shrines, traces of early monasteries, lagoons and wetlands, as well as opportunities for activities on the water. When looking for a holiday home, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on. Should the trip centre mainly on religious and archaeological sites, birdwatching or water activities?
Buddhist shrines and archaeological evidence
The ancient Seruwila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara temple is one of Sri Lanka’s 16 holiest Buddhist shrines. It can be reached by land or by water. The combination of religious significance and these two routes makes Seruwila a special point of interest for travellers interested in Buddhist history.
Deegawapiya is also one of Sri Lanka’s 16 holiest pilgrimage sites. King Saddatissa had the complex built in the 2nd century BC, and relics of the Buddha were enshrined there. Neelagiri Chethiya is one of Sri Lanka’s largest ancient stupas. These distinct details give the Eastern Province an archaeological and religious focus, without reducing the individual sites to a single sightseeing stop.
Velgam Vehera is an ancient Buddhist monastery. At the summit are the remains of a stupa dating from the reign of King Bhatika Tissa II, around 149 AD. At Rajagala, options include hiking and sightseeing among the ruins of an ancient monastery. For trip planning, historical sites and an experience specifically involving hiking can therefore be considered as separate interests.
Batticaloa: Lagoon, fort and distinctive nature observations
The Batticaloa Lagoon has extensive mangrove swamps and seagrass beds that attract numerous waterbirds. The Sathurukondan wetland is also known for the great variety and number of waterbirds and waders; visitors are interested in its birdlife year-round. Both places offer a reason to plan nature observation as a focus in its own right, alongside historical sites.
Batticaloa Fort was originally built in 1628 as a Portuguese trading and administrative centre. The “Singing Fish” phenomenon is also described in the Batticaloa Lagoon near Kallady Bridge on full-moon nights from April to September. Diving and snorkelling attract visitors to Kallady Beach. These examples are quite distinct: they range from a historic building to a seasonally described natural phenomenon and beach activities.
Batticaloa is the terminus of the Eastern railway line. Trains run daily from Colombo via Polonnaruwa to Batticaloa. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current timetable before your trip.
Water, surfing and birdlife
The water in Passikudah Bay is calm and clear and is described as ideal for swimming. Arugam Bay is listed as having a surf season from April to October. The comparison helps with thematic planning: Arugam Bay is known for a seasonal surfing opportunity, while Passikudah Bay is associated with a description of water conditions for swimming. This does not imply anything about current conditions; for specific travel plans, it is advisable to take the stated seasons and local conditions into account.
A total of 255 bird species have been recorded in Kumana National Park. The park also lies along the route of a traditional annual foot pilgrimage to the Hindu temple in Kataragama. Two different themes thus come together there: birdlife and a religious walking tradition. The Sathurukondan wetland, in turn, is characterised by year-round visitor interest in its waterbirds and waders. If you want to focus on nature observation, you can use these details as a guide alongside the temples and monasteries.
When choosing a holiday home, it therefore helps to set simple priorities: Would you like to focus your trip mainly on Buddhist shrines and archaeological evidence, are lagoons and birdlife your priority, or are you particularly interested in swimming, diving, snorkelling or surfing? The Eastern Province brings together these different themes, although they do not all relate to the same place or season.
