Discover Sur: Fort, Lighthouse and Seafaring
Accommodation in Sur
Sur can be discovered through buildings that reveal different aspects of its history: a former defensive tower became a lighthouse, a fort brings together rooms with different functions, and the Fath Al Khair Center focuses on a historic ship and traditional boat types. This gives your trip planning a clear focus on culture and seafaring.
Al Ayjah Lighthouse: from tower to navigation
Al Ayjah Lighthouse, also known as Sur Lighthouse, was created by converting a defensive tower. It served to guide wooden dhows safely into the lagoon of Sur. The building thus brings together two aspects: its original defensive function and its later role in guiding ships. If you want to get to know Sur through its maritime history, this change of function is a tangible starting point. The lighthouse represents the connection between architectural history and navigation, rather than simply describing the coastline.
Al Sunaysilah Fort: area, height and rooms
Al Sunaysilah Fort reveals another side of Sur’s history. The fort covers an estimated 2,500 square metres; its walls are about 55 metres long and more than five metres high. The main building reaches a height of 35 metres. Together, these measurements give an impression of the complex’s different dimensions: its estimated area, its walls and its main building.
The rooms also illustrate the fort’s different functions. The interior includes a simply designed mosque with two mihrabs, or prayer niches, as well as a classroom for teaching and memorising the Quran. A prison was intended for people who had committed serious crimes and for prisoners of war. A barzah hall was used for gatherings of community leaders; there were also storerooms and a water reservoir. The rooms mentioned thus range from religious practice and teaching to gatherings, detention and storage.
Fath Al Khair: return and maritime tradition
The Fath Al Khair Center, also known as the Fath Al Khair Maritime Museum, was officially inaugurated in November 2021 under the supervision of Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. Its maritime focus is connected to the history of the ship of the same name: in the early 1990s, the Fath Al Khair was returned to its home city through the efforts and funding of the people and merchants of Sur.
Models of traditional boats and ships are displayed alongside the historic vessel in the Center’s outdoor area. Here, an actual ship stands alongside models of various traditional boat types. This is a different way of exploring the maritime theme than at the lighthouse: there, the focus is on guiding dhows into the lagoon; here, it is on the history of a ship and the presentation of traditional boats and ships.
Cultural themes as a guide for your trip
When choosing your holiday apartment in Sur, you can first consider which of these aspects interests you most. The fort offers insight into the destination through its architecture and the different functions of its rooms; the lighthouse and Fath Al Khair Center bring navigation and maritime history to the fore. These differences can help you decide whether Sur is a good fit for a trip focused on culture and seafaring.
