In Papar, a Sunday market and railway history come together: a historical account tells of a steel truss bridge over the Papar River. There are also insights into the town’s oldest streets and, in the surrounding area, cultural, beach, river and nature experiences. When choosing your holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between these different highlights: What would you most like to discover during your stay?

Railway History and the Tamu

A 2012 announcement presented the historic North Borneo Railway as a travel experience in Sabah; before entering Papar, it crossed the Papar River on a steel truss bridge. The train then stopped in Papar for at least 30 to 40 minutes. The railway was presented as a Sabah travel experience that evokes the era of British North Borneo and earlier journeys by steam train.

The Tamu Train Papar route is listed as Tanjung Aru–Papar–Tanjung Aru. Check its current operating status before making plans. Papar’s Tamu is a separate attraction: the weekly open-air market takes place on Sunday mornings. If you want to get to know the town on market day, this regular weekly schedule is a useful point of reference for planning your trip.

Town History and Cultural Discoveries

A heritage walking tour described in 2022 passed through Papar’s oldest streets. The walk offered insights into the community, its culture and its oldest buildings. Tours took place in groups, each accompanied by a professional heritage guide. They also visited Papar Central Market, where vegetables, fruit, local snacks and handicrafts were available. The town exploration thus combined streetscapes and the market with glimpses of everyday life.

In the area around Papar, the Borneo Cultural Village offers a different way to experience local traditions. It features seven traditional houses with related activities. At the Murut House, visitors can try using a blowpipe; at the Tidung House, they can learn how to make fire with bamboo; and at the Bajau House, they can try traditional musical instruments. Traditional dance performances are staged on a platform that can accommodate up to 1,000 people. Each house has a different focus: hands-on demonstrations and trying out instruments complement the stage performances.

Rivers, Beaches and Nature in the Surrounding Area

Locals go jogging, picnicking and camping at Telinting Beach, and also enjoy water sports such as kayaking there. At Mandalipau White Water View & Fishpond, visitors can play in the river and relax on a traditional bamboo raft. The two places offer different kinds of water experiences: the beach features a range of outdoor activities, while Mandalipau combines the river with a bamboo raft.

There are also specific options for an active day trip. The summit of Kinandukan Hill is about 135 metres high and can be reached in around 20 minutes on average. Mondikot Deer Camp is located near Kg Mondikot in the upper catchment areas of the Papar River. Activities listed there include jungle trekking, kayaking, rafting and birdwatching. This gives you a short summit hike and several water- or nature-based activities to choose from when planning time in nature.

Choose the Focus of Your Holiday

If you want the market and town history to shape your holiday, make experiences in Papar the focus of your plans. For river, beach and cultural activities, include the surrounding area too. When looking for a holiday apartment in Papar, you can keep these different priorities in mind: the weekly market and town history offer a different focus from the waterside activities or the traditional houses at the Cultural Village.
