Lenggong: Gateway to World Heritage and Town History
Accommodation in Lenggong
Lenggong is the main gateway to the Lenggong UGGp and the Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 2012, the town has served as the main access point to the Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The layout of the area also illustrates the town’s role: the two clusters of the serial nomination area “Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley” are separated by the town of Lenggong. Lenggong is therefore significant not only as a gateway, but also because of its relationship to the two clusters.
A historic town and its school history
Lenggong also has its own historical story. The town is one of the oldest settlements in Perak. In the early 16th century, Tun Saban founded Lenggong as the historic administrative centre of the Lenggong district. This foundation links the town’s name to a specific historical function: Lenggong was the district’s administrative centre and is also one of Perak’s old settlements. The town’s history thus extends beyond its role as a gateway to the World Heritage Site.
Lenggong Malay Girl’s School is located in Kampung Sekolah in the historic town of Lenggong. It was founded with the aim of combating illiteracy in the Malay community, an effort that had been underway since 1890. Historically, the girls’ school is connected with Lenggong Malay Boys' School. The boys’ school building was demolished. The Lenggong Malay Girls’ School building, by contrast, still stands, but is no longer actively used as a school. Today, it is used for evening religious classes. The schools’ history thus connects an educational aim with the different paths taken by the two school buildings.
The historic town also has well-preserved older buildings and shop houses that are almost a century old. They add another dimension to the town’s built history alongside the schools. Those interested in Lenggong can explore different aspects of its history: its former administrative function, the history of its schools, and its older buildings and shop houses.
Village culture along the Perak River
In the area surrounding the destination, Kampung Beng, Kampung Luat and Kampung Temelong are designated as traditional villages in the first phase of the Lenggong UGGp. All three are located along the Perak River. Visitors can connect with the local community, its culture and the natural surroundings there. This offers a different perspective from the town’s history: in these villages, the community, culture and natural surroundings are at the heart of the experience. The villages thus offer a distinct cultural perspective alongside the World Heritage Site’s clusters and Lenggong’s town history.
