Kampung Kepayang brings together two distinct sides: the rich variety of plants at Taman Herba Negeri Perak and a local history linked to a mosque, a historic residence and shophouses. The garden draws attention to herbs and their various uses; the history of the buildings leads to the people and economic developments of the area. This contrast is a good starting point for planning your trip: are you more interested in plants and how they are used, or in architecture and the history of local leadership? Either perspective can help you pinpoint what interests you about Kampung Kepayang before you look for a holiday rental.

Herb Garden and the Uses of Plants

Taman Herba Negeri Perak is located in Kampung Kepayang. The 22-hectare herb garden contains 527 herb species, which serve a range of purposes. These include medicine, aromatherapy and cosmetics, as well as use in ulam dishes and as spices. The range therefore extends from culinary spices to other areas of use. The number of species describes the garden’s diversity, while the purposes listed show the different areas of life in which herbs play a role. The area and species figures may change over time.

Tin Mining and Early Local History

Masjid Ahmadiah was named after Toh Sedewa Diraja Ahmad. Its construction is linked to tin mining: the boom in Kampung Kepayang and Simpang Pulai in the late 19th century prompted Toh Sedewa Ahmad to have the mosque built. Thus, the building’s history is connected both to its namesake and to an economic impetus.

The Toh Sedewa Raja Abdul Wahab Bungalow was built in the late 1880s as the official residence of Penghulu Wahab, one of the earliest leaders of Kampung Kepayang. While tin mining is cited as the impetus for the mosque’s construction, the bungalow’s function as an official residence and Penghulu Wahab’s role are what stand out here.

Shophouses Along the Old Main Road

A survey in March 2013 recorded 50 significant pre-war and post-war buildings in Kampung Kepayang. Most were two-storey shophouses along Jalan Gopeng-Ipoh. This group offers a different scale from the individually named mosque or bungalow: the focus is on several buildings of the same type and their location along the road. Kampung Kepayang lies along the old north–south main road, Jalan Gopeng-Ipoh. The Kong Fook Ngam and Sri Siva Subramaniam temples were outside the town limits.

Choose a Focus for Your Trip

For planning your trip, the change in scale makes a difference: the historical perspective may begin with one person and their role, or encompass an entire group of shophouses. Those who prefer to view cultural history as the development of a place can look to mining, the mosque and the streetscape as different points of reference; those chiefly interested in cultivated plants can focus on the herb garden. Before looking for a holiday rental, consider which of these approaches would make your stay especially interesting.
