Temerloh: Rivers, Market and Patin
Accommodation in Temerloh
Temerloh lies on the banks of the Pahang River, where it meets the Semantan River. A Sunday market, river activities and an old town with colonial buildings give your stay several distinct focal points. When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider whether you mainly want to plan around the market, the town and its architecture, activities on the water or nearby destinations.
Rivers and the Market
Boat trips on the Pahang River are offered at Esplanade Park, where visitors can also relax by the river. The Semantan River is a starting point for boat trips, recreational activities and river cruises. The park and the Semantan thus offer two different settings for water-based activities. Check the availability of river activities locally.
Pekan Sehari Temerloh in Lurah Semantan has been well known for several decades. On Sundays, the market stretches for one kilometre along the Pahang River and is operated by the Temerloh Municipal Council. Around 607 traders sell vegetables, fruit, meals, pastries, fish, chicken, meat and other goods; the number of traders and the selection may vary. If Pekan Sehari is part of your travel plans, schedule your visit for a Sunday and check current operating details before setting out.
Old Town and Patin Cuisine
The old town, formerly called Kuala Semantan, includes colonial buildings and streets lined with two-storey shophouses. The shophouses complement the colonial buildings, creating a distinctive architectural streetscape. Kubang Gajah Park is in the centre, near Town’s Park.
Temerloh is known as “Bandar Ikan Patin” (“City of Patin Catfish”) because of the prevalence of Patin catfish. Patin tempoyak is considered a typical Temerloh dish: a freshwater fish dish with durian sauce. At Patin Square, there is a restaurant offering a selection of Patin fish dishes. Fish and food are also among the goods sold at Pekan Sehari. These are two distinct points of reference for planning your meals: the market combines fish and food with other goods, while the selection at Patin Square includes Patin fish dishes.
Saturday Evening and Nearby Excursions
A car boot sale takes place in Temerloh every Saturday evening. Anyone can take part as a seller or buyer. Unlike the Sunday Pekan Sehari, this is an evening event open to everyone. Check locally whether it is taking place before setting out.
Activities listed at nearby Gunung Senyum include mountain climbing, jungle trekking, cave exploration and camping. Also nearby is the Kuala Gandah Elephant Centre, where visitors can bathe elephants from 2 pm. Check times and availability with the centre before your visit. The two excursion options have different focuses: Gunung Senyum offers several outdoor activities, while elephant bathing in Kuala Gandah has a specific time-of-day reference, starting at 2 pm.
